1st post, so please be gentle! Just got into the CarPc thing (was going to build my own, but ended up getting a good deal on a developed rig) and been learning about RR. Love the DFX5 interface, very slick and customisable... have already had a go at modding the menus so they don't all pre-load and edited the buttons on each page to just contain the modules I want to use! I'm in the UK, so a lot of the cool functionality like gas prices and weather will need tweaking to work... I also was struggling to think of how to get an internet connection away from a WiFi source... until I stumbled across this awesome free app today! It apparently also works in the US, and should allow those modules that require the 'net to get the data they need (obviously requires a suitable phone/call plan/no data cap or charges). I apologise if this has been already posted elsewhere, but the missus is nagging me to go and give her a hand (spent all day doing cable install for car pc to my XKR) so I've not got the time to spend ages searching tonight (and was so excited by my discovery I just had to post it!):rtfm:
Info is as follow:
For Android/I-phone/Windows Mobile etc:
USB 2G/3G tethering - http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/
I pay a massive £5/mth for unlimited internet for my Google G1 phone, by using the above app on phone/laptop (and car PC) you can connect phone to PC and get on the interweb for 'free', anywhere there is a signal. I think it will use WiFi if that's how phone is connected and then revert to 3G or 2G depending on what it can get. Tried it on the laptop tonight and worked fine and very quickly...
Beauty of this is for car pc application, simple USB connection to the phone will allow windows/app update via internet, Internet radio, google/browser access, email and weather/fuel prices, BBC IPlayer (UK) etc access (as originally intended by software like RideRunner). Can also obviously use it for netbook/laptop accesson the move if you need a bigger screen!
Looking forward to getting to know you all - Mistral_blue (Mark) UK
