I don't agree with charging. Not saying everyone has but I have always donated. This forum completely supports the skin, points out bugs, even helps fix them. Most of us are as actively involved as we can be. Their are elements of the skin that have been contributed by many different members of the community. I will always appreciate the hard work, but I think the charging will change mp3car as we know it. It's just one persons (my) opinion. That would really disappoint me.

I don't like to speak on behalf of anyone specially if I'm not authorized to do so but I believe John as made his mind already and said DFX5.0 will be free with a specific splash screen at the start that will have some legal wording or so.

Then if you would like to have the ability remove that splash screen at the start or customize it, then you'll have the option to pay for that.

I believe (IMHO) the solution its very fair to everyone and it should satisfy both sides without hurting anyone.

I was just tossing my opinion out there. It's nothing caustic directed towards John and I agree he can and SHOULD do what he feels is fair for the skin. I do agree the splash screen thing is fair. Can't wait for the dang skin though!!

I know that the price isn't prohibitive, but to be truly honest, I download mp3's, movie's and lot of other stuff including SOFTWARES for free, it is wrong, but I do, and if I will start to pay for softwares, I probably should start for paying my pirated windows and other things that I am already using...
What? you can't afford 5.00 or you just don't want to pay because you don't pay for anything else? Which is it?

Yes, I think this issue is pretty much closed now. The skin will be released, and work 100%, for absolutely free. If someone wants to donate something, then they can customize their splash screen and use what the want.

I think that is totally 100% fair. For those that make a donation, they get one little small perk. For those that do not, the skin functions as it always has regardless.

Now, as mentioned back to issues at hand

Yes, the bug tracker has been went through, and just one small bug is remaining, and is a very easy fix, just getting the time to get around to it now.

much more cleanup and stuff has been added that is not in the bug tracker. That has been what has been eating a lot of time over the past couple weeks. We are working very hard to make it as solid, and "bullet proof" as possible.

Blue ZX3 spent considerable time making it Vista / Win 7 compatible with the profile mode stuff.

The way RR has always worked is it saves ini's, settings, and all that stuff right in the programs folder. Win 7 goes about this differently and the info needs to be saved to a user/data directory for compliance.

The thought, and this is the first time I have put a time line out there, is the skin SHOULD (pending any major problems) be ready by the end of the month. At least that is what is how it is planned.

1080p I don't know what it is but I want it!!!

First this reminds me of the LCD TV commerical "1080p I don't know what it is but I want it".

I have been programming/coding since 1973, you name the language I have probably written in it. Mostly commerically for the firms I have worked for and also for free just for the heck of it.

That said, I really understand the level of effort that goes into the FE, the skins and the plugins. And while I greatly appreiciate the freeware I also use the payware. And my decision to pay is based on how much I like the capabilites.

I really like DFX4 and have been anticipating DFX5 for quite a while and I will most certainly pay 5.00 USD for it and the same would go for RR. I have purchased boards from Dejan (TPMS) which recoup his outlay for parts.

The sheer amount of effort (time) that went into the DFX4 skin is should be compensated just as Dejan was compenstated.

As for the can of worms, lets open it.

JohnWPB says 5.00 DFX5 with updates. Maybe RR also says 5.00 with updates. One off plugins 1.50, plugins with updates 2.00.

It so would not break the bank and it perhaps would encourage more frequent updates.

In the US commerical programmers gets $38-$75 per hour. The company that pays them bills them to customers at $126-$275 per hour. So one commerical programmer billed to a one year project would cost $575,000.

The finished program would have to sell 1,000's of copies at hundreds each to make up the costs of a team of programmers. Financial houses have custom programs that exist no where else, but pay huge dividends to the stock brokers who use them.

I don't know how many copies of DFX or RR have been installed, I doubt more than a few hundred. But sticking to the point a lot of R&D and time goes into great code.

I'll finish with once any of you developers start charging you are also held to a mucher higher standard and are definitely expected to be accountable to your customers. As we are no longer your fans but now customers.

    Then again, it's only 5 bucks. 1080p ...

First, let me say that this is John's baby and he has every right to charge for his skin. However, just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. I always thought it was a point of pride that RR was not like CF. It may be said and done, but it's still a slippery slope towards the CF model. Yeah, it doesn't seem like it now, but we've already had RR go closed source. We keep making these "small" steps towards CF under the guise of "this will make things easier" or "this will help the community in the long run" or "you still have other skins to use". What happens when John starts feeling pressure to reward those who pay with better features and support? Or better yet they demand better features and support? Does he then split the skin into paid "premium" and free "basic" versions (In fact that will have already happened since the paid for version allows you change the splash screen while the unpaid one does not). Does he then charge more for DFX 6 because of those demands? And because you can't control what someone does with the installer once they have bought and downloaded the file, will we then be forced in the future to register the skin with John to keep people from freely downloading it elsewhere? Suppose guino decides to get in on the action and start charging licensing fees on those skins that charge. Slippery slope.......
