I tried Win7 on my CarPC, and even through the rough stuff, really did try to make it all work. I had SOOOooo many issues, and it was driving me nuts. Audio drivers refused to work correctly with RR, no matter what version I installed and tried and tried, It refused to use s3 sleep, and many many other small issues. This is on a motherboard that is less than 6 monhts old since it was manufactured, and is "Designed to work with Win 7"...Needless to say, I switched back to XP.
I know Blue ZX3 did this very same things a few weeks ago, I told him it was not worth it, as I spent a lot of wasted time trying to get it to work. Well after a week, he formated the drive and put XP back :)
Can you just imagine this while driving :) LOL
there is a software, RT Seven, where you can customize the instalation disk of windows 7, you can revome all this annoying stuff like the user control...
I use win7 now, because it boot faster than XP...
well yeah, UAC is no good for carpc's. it can be turned off very easily in the control panel...
windows 7 is great for skype because the audio stack can switch between sources and inputs with ease, seamlessly. windows 7 helps with reinstalls. saves so much time on that alone. you can actually use the desktop in win7 with your touchscreen, the osk is great and so is the taskbar.
win7 also recovers from hard shutdowns and broken hardware much better then xp ever could. its a very smart os, whereas in xp you really have to make sure yourself everything is proper. more drivers install automatically in windows 7 then any other os, just be hooked to the internet and its rare you have to manually install driver software.
security is also night and day from xp.
i just reinstalled my carpc yesterday with win7, not a single hitch. i guess it might be awhile before the modding community finally jumps away from xp, but theres a reason why the next couple os's will still be longhorn based...
Haha nice pic John.
I agree Win 7 is much more "ready out of the box" when it comes to drivers. As for RR obviously it was designed with XP in mind and would need a major overhaul. Im sure we wont stay with WIN 7 forever but for now it doesn't seem to practical.
I also have to agree with John about the sleep mode. Sleep mode has been a NIGHTMARE with my home and home theater pc's.
just to toss my 2 cents in, my win 7 car pc works flawlessly aside from rrvoice of course. The only issue i've noticed is RR doesn't like the win7 realtek default audio driver (think it was realtek anyway) but once you install the one off their website it works just fine.
Ok, we are getting down to the wire now :) As you may have noticed the Bug Tracker is down, as Blue is resetting it, and clearing out all of the fixed bugs, suggestions and issues.
DFX5 will have more features and such, but the installer is actually smaller :) TONS of the little AutoIt.exe's have now been moved into the DFX.dll which has sped thigns up, as well as removing a lot of those .exe's from all over the place.
Some of them had to remain, as they deal with graphics overlays, and control clicking app's such as iGuidance for navigating the menu's and such, something that is very difficult to do with VB6.
The 4 additional people have jumped on board, and Blue should have the new installer out to them at any time now.
I do not foresee any problems, as this skin has been under a microscope for weeks and weeks now. So if all goes will with the RC1, it will be avail for download.
I think all the installer kinks are worked out now. Waiting on a updated RRVoice dll from jebus then of course the out come of the testers results. As John has mentioned, the installer size is smaller, as in smaller than the DFX4 one was, yet the skin has sooo much more than v4, features & improvemnts
A second round of tests - WHAAAAATT! :angrymob:  <man stops holding his breath>

This will be a bit latter as there is just way too much going on with this skin to work out the last of the kinks, little alone doing the dfx skinning and figuring where to put it. Though, the version that is coming with the skin is a newer version.
