Welcome to the forums!
Yea, it used to be that anyone could get the source code. Now, it is still pretty much open source, but just a select group of people now have access to the source code. It is much easier to manage in this way. At one point there were like 3 versions of RR that were compiled by different individuals. One version did one thing, where another couldn't do that, but did do something else. It was very frustrating!
RR is at the point now where is just he engine to drive the skins for the most part. Everything has pretty much gone modular, the RR source code does not really need altered to accomplish something. Most of the individual components of RR have been pulled from the source code, and are now plugins. Such as all radios, audio players, weather to just name a few.
When you download RR, there is a folder where it installs that has the sample codes to write plugins in many different programming languages.
Yea, technically it is not "open source" but, it is very close
As mentioned, the core of RR is really now a skinning engine, and all additional functionality is done through the plugins. There is sample source code for the plugins in the RR folder, and anyone can make a plugin for RR and release it.
As for the source, if something was needed, and it would benefit RR, then one of the people with the source would be more than willing to add it. If it is a new feature though, that can and should be done via the plugin method.
Currently, I think the users that have the source are Guino, Blue, Mitch and myself.
4 people only having the source is under no interpretation of open source.
heck by that qualification Windows 7 is open source as I'm sure more than 4 people have access to the source.
Side note, last version that was open source was back in 2007, I think, should be downloadable from a link in blues sig.
Maybe the better question is, why is the user asking for it? Are they havng a problem or would like to see something added to the core that's more than a PI level.
Was it due to multiple versions and incompatibilities between builds as John states as one of the problems?
I use RR+DFx4 on my car as its a very good combination for a CarPC. The software is good but I think it could be better if it were completely open. Fragmentation, multiple versions, customizations, optimizations, etc.. can be seen as one of those BUG AS A FEATURE of a community hacking at a project
authors have complete control over their work and its their choice how they publish/sell/give-away their work but maybe in this case the source was closed for reasons that could had been worked and kept benefiting from the community
thanks for the hard work
Geeezzz..here we go again!

Yeah, who cares? It works. It's free. It's customizable through plugins. End of discussion.
