Thats completly up to John, and from what I've heard from him, I wouldn't count on it. Worst case...just install it to a diff folder and only copy over the files you want, but I would highly NOT advise the for the next release, as there have been many internal changes.

Just download it and install to a dummy location. Then pick and choose what you want from the files.

Not really sure if this is an issue with RR or DigitalFX

While I'm driving, RR just closes itself with winamp still playing in the background. This happens randomly and quite frequent. I would either have to end task winamp and reload RR or restart the computer.

    please help!

and what treetop mentioned may not be a bad idea
the ideal order is read, read, read, search, read, search, read, read, then post

EDIT* also the DigitalFX2 thread is still a good source of information, there are some things (like the temp) that hasn't changed with this new version, so even though it's closed it's still a good thread to skim through for answers.
    thanks for the help.

Ok, sorry for my absence from the thread for a few days, but as I mentioned, it has been a pretty rough time here. That aside:

As for creating a zip of the skin, and foregoing the installer, I have decided not to go that path. It is very simple to choose the path when the installer is run, and choose something like skins/TempDFX. Then you can just copy out the files that you want.

The main reason I went with the installer, it is simple makes it far easier on the average user, and even the advanced user. If I were to put together a text file telling you what to copy where, what to register and so forth, it would take forever to get this skin working correctly.

    - The installer takes care of installing all of the plugins required for the skin
    - Registers all Dll's for Winamp, Road Runner Cam, GDI+, Image Viewer, Screen Lock, Tire Pressure monitoring, Google Earth, HDRadio, Rmedia Database and a slew of other things
    - It installs all the files required for weather, XM & Sirius Logo's, High quality weather icons, and a selection of backgrounds for use with the skin. The backgrounds have Now moved to the root RR folder, so all skins with transparency installed can easily share them. They were originally in the skin folder, for one simple reason, DigitalFX was the very first fully transparent skin, and I didn't think of putting them in the Root RR folder, as no other skins could use them :P

In the next release, the installer will ONLY remove the DigitalFX skin folder, that was an oversight on my part! So I highly recommend not using the uninstaller till the next release, as it will remove the weather icons, XM art, Sirius art and quite a few other things.

With the way things have been progressing, I can say that the music database program that BlueZX3 has been working on for months, will be incorporated into the next release of the skin. In fact it is 90% done as of now. You will have the option of using the standard browser, just as it works now, or the database. The choice is yours, but I HIGHLY recommend the database! You guys are going to be absolutely blown away with what the Database is capable of!

Here are some things that I would personally like to be able to do with my music collection:
    • Searching and browsing music needs to be fast! Searching in Road Runner currently takes an eternity, and RR appears frozen till the search is completed.
    • Be able to see a list of all artist in my collection, and being able to select one. Then being able to see a list of every song that artist has done, no matter what compilation album, or in what folder in your collection. Then being able to put all of those songs in a playlist.
    • Searching for any word, artist name or whatever, and seeing a list of all songs that contains that, and be able to create a playlist out of that.
    • The ability to have a virtual 10 disk changer. One that you can add songs to a disk, remove songs from a disk, add an existing Playlist to that disk, or even an artist or album, and name the disk whatever you want. Then play any of the disks with a single click. When you switch from one disk to another, have it remember the song and position you were on for each disk.
    • Be able to rename a virtual disk, and even clear it to start over again.
    • The ability to do power searches. Something like searching for >2006 and see all songs in your collection from 2007 on.
    • Being able to browse you music, exactly as Road Runner does now, with the folder structure. AND the ability to list my music by artist, Album, genre, and Songs. And be able to save a default browse mode that will be remembered until I change it again.
    • Be able to sort the list of music by Track Number, Title, Artist, Album or Genre.
    • Have RR remember the songs that I play the most Be able to choose from top 10, 25, 50,100,200,or even 400 songs, and have them displayed in the order of most played to the least played.
    • The ability to have a song playing and be able to see how many times that song has been played, and even the date that it was played last.
    • Whenever I change music, and create new "On the fly" playlists, to be able to browser back through them. Say I am listening to a few songs I picked, then I change to a virtual disk, then I play an album that I like. Now, with the click of a button be able to cycle through those 3 like a music history so to speak.
    • The ability to search how I want, by artist, song title, year, album title, file name on the hard drive, Genre or by ALL of them! Such as searching for "Michael 1984" and see a list of all songs in my collection done by any artist that contains "Michael" that was done in 1984.
    • Being able to randomize the music I am listening to. The shuffle, in plain English, just sucks It does not remember what you listened to, it just jumps around. Many times I will shuffle a list of 50 songs or so, and seem to hear the same ones over and over again with shuffle turned on, and not hearing others at all.
    • If I add new music to my system, be able to add them to the database, and show me how many songs were added.
    • Handle all the ratings, so an external script is no longer needed to rate songs
I know, this seems like a really tall order to fill. Most of it just seems like wishful thinking...... Well I can tell you that the new database, will do all of the above and a lot more! Blue ZX3 has outdone himself, and has worked for literally months putting all of this together and getting it working.

WOW,WOW!! What a review!! I think even MY dropped...

I will also have to send some of that thanks back towards John for spending the time to first, incorporate this into one of the top, I'd say 3 Skins for RoadRunner. Which is appreciated a lot... For something I'd only started because I didn't care for the old rating system and wanted more from it. Second, for all of the countless hours spent chatting night after night to make what I thought was easy to use, even easier for the end user, as he knows much more in that dept than I do. Every time we'd talk, and I had something new for him to try, he was just astonished every time by the fixes and added features along the way.

I knew that he would make a write up on it but, WOW...never expected one like that! Thanks!! The only thing else that I have to say is that I hope that it works out of the box for all on the first run...

Sorry, correction...I don't recall that search method, thats more like two of the power searches put together, which is currently not avail, but could be, only time will tell.

One other small detail that was left out, was the fact that the path info in the database is only relitive to your rr music path. What does that mean, it means that as long as your music is identical in all locations that you have your music stored, that you can transport your database file between the different loc's if you wanted too and it would still work... One good example would be to build the database(Db) in the house and then just place the db file in the car and wham, it just works like as if you built it in the car. But the folder structure HAS to be a clone, otherwise it wont work.

I will be also placing a Donation button in my RR Media thread for anyone that would like to make donation toward all the effort and time that I have put into this project.

Cheers to all your good work John. I'm looking forward to all the little fixes in the next release.

And considering all the questions this skin gets, an installer is definitely the right way to go. Makes it real easy for everyone involved.

While reading all this cool stuff, I was reminded of a couple of questions about playing compressed files that I had....

    1. I use mediamonkey to organize my music in my house and move it to the car. With mediamonky, I have embedded ratings into a portion of my collection. This doesn't translate into something usuable in RR. I'm not totally up on mp3 tagging, but was wondering why we can't do that.

    2. I also have embeded art into this songs, again not usuable in RR.... So similar question as for #1.

Anyone that does not "feel" like setting all their tags correctly, is just, in my opinion, is not making full use of all of todays standards. Somewhere down the road, you'll probably wish that you had done so....

    [Edit]

Side note: did a very breif look at mediamonkey and discovered that it too uses a SQLite based database, which would actually make it really easy to also be able to pull data from...ie...anything. If there's enough interest, I could look further into being able to use its database inconjunction with mine.

Yes, you can use embeded art(Mp3Art plugin, not really recomended!) but the art that is embeded is NOT of that great quality, and much better to just have the art in the folder it self. Then you can have nice and clear album art.
