Would you like the ability to set certain points, using Latitude and Longitude, and know when you are "in range" of that location, and have that code built into Road Runner? (Pressing a "Save Location" button could pop-up an OSK to name the location, and save it for further reference) You could also sit at home and build the .ini "Database" with key places in your area, and then just transfer the .ini file to the car.

    Examples of use would be:

-Warn you a half mile before a toll road so you can get change out in time
-Tell you are approaching a tunnel so if you are on the phone, you don’t just get cut off, and also warn you about iminate GPS dropout.

-Warning you of a known speed trap area
    - Set gas station location on remote roads, to warn you if say you are passing the last gas station for a couple hundred miles, to remind you to make sure you have enough gas.
-And one of my favorites! “Tourist mode” Liquid Smoke thought this one up. You could have area’s set up, that when you were driving, fire a script to speak commands to you, based on your location. Such as “Attention the house where Charlie Brown was born is the large yellow and black house coming up on the $direction$ side” ($Direction$ being Left or Right, calculated based on your direction of travel)
-Using scripting and putting the date in the notes field, you could have reminders / events only on certain days. The script fires, looks at the date today, compares that to the notes field and could come up with something on your drive home, and you get close to where you should turn to go to your bank. It could trigger something like “Today is Friday, remember to stop at the bank” Or leaving work could trigger “Today is Wednesday, remember to pick up little Johnny from soccer practice”
-(Tossing the data to a script and doing some time calculation) On the way to work “Dunk N’ Donuts is just ahead if you want to stop for coffee. You will have to make it quick though, as you only have 17 minutes to get to work” Or on those off days, “You do not have time to stop for coffee this morning or you will be late for work “
    - Your car "Knowing" that you have pulled into your driveway at home, and can trigger events, such as syncing files, uploading info to your wireless network such as GPS tracks or anything else to a folder on a HomePC.
    - Road Hazard warnings, such as area's of bad road, Bridges that can potentially ice in cold weather, dangerous intersections ect.

With the code built into Road Runner, the sky is the limit to what could be done, based on the ini file that contains the Lat & Lon for a location. It could speak to get your attention, take you to any skin screen, a Pop-up window, a .wav file played... ect ect. The type of action taken, based on the location, is also saved in the ini, so a different action can be taken for each event. For instance, if you are approaching an area you have deemed as a speed trap, and ONLY if you are going over the speed limit, or no matter what speed you are going (All set in the .ini file) a skin with a large display of your speed could be shown for a given number of seconds, before returning to normal RR operation.

So, what does everyone think of this, would this be something useful added into Road Runner?

we talked about this at length a while ago, so ill post some comments and thoughts about it later tonite after dinner.
But this is definitely gonna be some kick *** ****.

    johnwpb,

I know on long trips, particularly on the interstates, it would be great to mark exits that have good gas stations and restaurants. I've driven a particular 500 mile stretch of I-20 for 20 years and still have trouble remembering where the good exits are until I'm already passing them.

Pre-loading certain POI's too would be a nice feature, without having to do the POI search for it.

    Could be a cool feature.

I'll also chime in as I did make an autoit program that pretty much did this but after I started to use it was a little too clock heavy.

So having this ability built right into RR would be totally AWESOME!!! Like LS said, possibilities would be endless as to what you could use it for..

its a couple of bat files and a skin ,just load cd press button in skin and it plays, and a unload button to stop playing.

i have made a transparent skin for it ,not as good as johns but it works.

Well, I finally finished my SUPER ZIPS.DAT file. This file is about 3-4 times larger then the previous zips.dat file. The information is from 4 different sources, the original file, a file from the US Census bereau, Toasters file, and another website that I found that had the ability to convert large lists of zips to lats and lons.

Unfortunately, there really is no way that I can verify the accuracy of any of the information, so I included them all, and some of the information was VERY DIFFERENT. It should, however, help with the "resolution", meaning, that there are more lats and lons to compare your current lat and lon to, as there could be up to 4 coordinates for a single zip code.

The file is a little large, and as of yet, I haven't really been able to test it out, so, I am looking for like 5 people that I can send the file to to test it out. e-mail me at [email protected], and I will e-mail the file to you tomorrow. Make sure you can accept zip files as large as 2 megs.
