Have you looked at what john did in DFX3/4? Is that what you're talking about, or are you trying to do it 'on the fly'?
How can I use a variable as a font color code
I tried
$color1$
which was stored in my skin ini as color1=125
Tried in quotes
tried as "=$COLOR1$"
currently I have it working as being defined as color1 $color1$
but I want them to change as the setting is changed with out having to reset the skin.
Anyhelp on ths is much appreciated.
I know it is probably a simple answer from someon..

Im trying to make a font color changer that wont require a restart of the skin or RR to make the changes take effect.

well i do use var's for my color but they still need a re-load , otherwise any setting saved to the skin.ini is not active until reload, rr won't see it.
what about useing the text file you are creating in the inc, then when you change the txt file the colors should change to , untested
check out my font color changer in GMLAN...it doesnt require a restart of RR...but it still saves and changes the color on the fly...
@x10 dose it also activate the colors on the fly without restart of skin thou. never managed that , which ever way i did, saving is the easy part but having it active without reload , i could not do ,
...i guess it does use the reloadskin command whats wrong with doing it that way though? why would it be a problem if you did reload the skin?
unless you want a preview i suppose , a preview of some font in color choosen , if this is the case thunder look at tek3 and havc i think they have preview modes
i made a button and an area in the font chooser screen that you can test the color before setting it...all i did was add a test font variable....so you can press that and then once you're happy with it you can press "Set Font Color" and it will set the main font color variables...
