    digitalFX heavy CPU usage

is there any way to get digitalFX to not cause so much of a cpu load I love to look and feel of it but itputs an extreme load on the system to the point it can't bring up the playlist however if i cange to the default skin it does fine

    any advise would be great,

    yonu

in my limited knowledge, that's why many people use light skin cuz of limitation of their system.. dfx is one of the most functional and perhaps heavy one... if you have weak computer, ilist won't do great... if u are using ilist in playlist and have below avg system, i suggest u turn it off and see how it works..

Sounds like the flash problem to me. Search it up.

I have seen this discussion many times in the forums, and I just do not understand the High CPU usage that some report.

The DigitalFX skin itself uses "No CPU" by itself. As the skin is not "running". It is just a set of .PNG images that are displayed by Road Runner.

YES there are quite a few scripts that work with the skin, such as the weather scripts, Screen Locker and such, but those only run when loading the weather screens, or locking the skin. Even then the scripts use like 1% CPU and close within a second or two.

There is one thing that can make the DFX skin use a tiny bit more of CPU compared to other skins, and that is that the icons on the main menu are dynamic. Meaning, they are indicators, and RR draws them every one second. The icons are like 2k each, and there are only 8 on the screen at a time, so a total of 16k. So this is also very minimal on CPU cycles.

More than likely the problem is a Adobe Flash issue. The DFX skin uses flash to display the animated weather maps, as well as a 3D logo in the menu skin if you have chosen that option. Use INTERNET EXPLORER to install the latest flash plugin at Adobe's website.

The skin also uses iLists, to see if this is the problem, put Usedx=false in the rr.ini to turn iLists off globally. iLists just do not play well with some onboard gfx cards and such.

Lastly, at the top of the RR forums, check the FAQ's, and read the one "How to speed up Road Runner". There are some great tips in there on how to speed things up.

Here is a screen capture comparing the DFX skin and the BMV2 skin. I replaced the "IN:" temperature, with a CPU label so the CPU Usage could be seen in the BMV2 skin. When running both skins go from around 5% to 20% CPU. This is the same in both skins on my system. The CPU fluctuates quite a bit even without RR running, as it is mainly the Operating system over head and such.

As you can see, there is no decernable CPU usage difference in the BMV2 and the DigitalFX skin: (In fact the BMV2 skin was using slightly more when the screen capture was taken!)

ok i made the changes you recommended and it behaves better however I have noticed using the dfx skin it stops working in the music mode for instance if i click playlist it just sits there and i am unable to do any thing else in RR other than end task on it and restart it it doesn't do this in the default skin and thoughts?

    John -

The search feature is currently not working (I get a Data Base error), so I can't search for iLists. But what is iLists?

I am trying to resolve my High CPU usage issue - I've went through all of the steps you've recommended and even reinstalled my complete OS without any luck.

Above you said to try this:

The skin also uses iLists, to see if this is the problem, put Usedx=false in the rr.ini to turn iLists off globally. iLists just do not play well with some onboard gfx cards and such.
Before I turn off iLists, I'd like to know what it is and what I will be losing (if that resolves my high CPU Usage issue). As I stated before, the Search Forum feature is not working, so I can't search for it at the moment.

Currently I am around 70-80%, hitting 100% pretty often.

Edit - Eventually the search function got fixed and I found it. Basically iLists allow for quick smooth scrolling through long lists. I disabled it, and it did not help resolve my crappy performance issues. I also downloaded the latest flash and directX. Still having issues. Its odd, DFX 4.0 seems to "skip" at every tick of the second hand.

Just sitting here watching RR idle, at each second hand tick the CPU jumps wildly. From, say 51% to 85%, then down to 52% then up to 79%.

I took a short video, I can post it on you tube if someone wants to see what I am talking about...
