For a HTPC, look into XBMC. It's setup specifically for that. The project started on the original XBox, but has sense expanded well beyond that.
MediaPortal is another excellent Front End for an HTPC.
i've tried many FEs for my htpc. i even tried rr for a bit. it came down to gbpvr and mp. mp offers many more skins (i particularly like xfactor, http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/x-...in-r247-68714/, and the lcars interfaces).
for my system, at least, gbpvr has been more stable (mp crashed every couple of days, necessitating a reboot), and gbpvr supports the mediamvp. ymmv.

greg

Also (if you have the resources) give Windows 7 Media Center a try. It does pretty much everything you need it to, and with the Media Browser plug-in it does even more.

guys, how do these other app working out for you as far as running ext. app is concerned?
sheesh! I miss responding to a post for 2 days, and I am concidered "not active in some time."
I am actually in Canada right now, and will be back home in Florida in a week.
I use RR for an inwall touscreen for media, but for the media PC, as mentioned, nothing beats XBMC! Also, as mentioned, it does not allow for embedding aps, but thats fine for me in a HTPC enviorment.
A couple of drawbacks for rr exist as well:
RR roes not allow you to superimpose images/text on top of the video.
RR can not get and display info about the videos from online databases and such.
here is a screen cap i took after modifying the PM3HD skin to support the new "ClearArt". The image in the bottom left will show when you either pause or show the shows info on the screen (Both in the below capture)
here are a couple of google image captures of other skins and screens in XBMC:

Funny, I just put a touchscreen monitor in the kitchen that access's my Home Server for music, tv etc, also an archive of Cookbooks for the girl
I have a touchscreen ready for the wall if I ever move to a new house (Renting).
Back when the idea was new, it was funny to me how RR/DFX would end up in the house being exactly what I need.
