Wow, talk about simplistic.... I bet someone here could skin that in a matter of hours. I wonder how much people/money was involved in designing that for Range Rover. I would have done it for free![]()
Hey Guys,
on a discussion on rangerovers.net I asked a fellow-member to take some snaps of his new range rover supercharged 2006 satnav/entertainment system...
It isnt the prettiest, but its simplicity is well appreciated by current owners, maybe inspiration for some skinners, maybe even I'll throw my ideas together with this to make a skin

the car is the bomb!!! but yet the interface is kind of poor..... like the buttons in the S.W
Yeah, it isnt really a work of art... however come to think of it neither is MMI, iDrive or most other systems... I think most of our skins although they look very nice, are not nearly as functional as we'd like them to be! They probably spent way more time than you estimate to research a very simple interface...
But yeah, this is made by Jaguar and is prbably pretty similar to the newer Jags (can anyone comment?) I might take some ideas out of this to make a OEM feel, simple, useable skin...
But my overall feeling of the radio and such is that it is indeed TOOOO simple... but we must keep in mind they have a bunch of hardbuttons with dedicated functions...

i think they keep em simple cause you are interacting with them while traveling at a average speed of lets just say 45. if they make em complicated then they know that more accidents would occur.
just my 2 cents.
my wish list:

It's also annoying to type in addresses in the nav etc.
I think the goal of a range rover skin isn't copying the OEM system as good as possible,
but make one we customers desire to have.
If you would ask a New RR owner about the interface, they would probably say they like it, because the never saw anything else. But if you would show them some of the skins made here on this forum, I think they would all like to switch to them.
But I agree about the simplicity. The easier the use of it, the better. But that has nothing to do with the graphic part of it.
So if you're trying to make a RR skin, it should look like a next generation one. The one they should have made at Landrover's...
Finished!
pc 99% - install 100% - audio 100%
Yeah, the use did point out that the screen requires too hard of a pressing to register stuff...
I know the interface is crappy, I was just pointing out a system that exists.... the stuff I liked about it was: clear buttons, less useless info on some screens (Like the Nav screen where you enter whether you are going to Address, City, Zip, bla bla)... I also think their layout is SIMPLE and should be of inspiration to some (do not read "copy their layout it kicks ***", that is not what I meant)...
As for the owners saying they love it just cause they bought it I dont think it is really an issue on that forum (it doesnt change anything for our purposes btw), but that forum is mainly a place where people **** about problems, ask for suggestions from fellow owners, etc... so people are the first to admit the vehicles flaws...
Also, apparently the MP3 CD handling is very slow and ****y (not even ID3!!!!)

Hi Roy - I saw all these hits from mp3car.com and had to come check it out.
I've owned & used a few different NAV systems. The latest Range Rover one is by far the most full featured, more time could definitely have been put in for better intuitiveness & ease of use. The hard buttons do help to a point, but they could have been better laid out as well.
It does do what it's supposed to, just not as elegantly as the home grown systems you all have here.
Finally, Roy do you have anymore pics of your setup? Your Range Rover looks cool and I'd love to see that onboard PC.
Thanks,
Michael
