Stock BMV2 Skin Now Optimised for 7 Inch screens

Has anyone noticed that with large fonts set in windows, the stock BMV2 skin on a 7" screen at 800x600 has lots of text, dates and info boxes either cut off or out of line?

Well here is a finished BMV2 skin that ive optimised for large fonts on a 7" screen

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/adspace/files/BMV2.1.zip

Now theres no more cutoffs and it all looks straight and tidy on all screens.

This is a complete skin with blue highlights and drops straight into your Road Runner\Skins folder without affecting anything else. See the readme for more info.

If anyone wants the red highlight pack for it ill be uploading a revised BMV2Red zip thatll work with both versions very soon.

(It even still works on 8" and larger screens too btw)

    Hope you all like it

If you had looked at it you'd see that the skins on my site use the "ARIAL NARROW" fonts ... So, the reason why the text is cut off on your shots is because you have not installed the fonts the skin requires: http://guino.home.insightbb.com/Arial_Narrow_Fonts.zip

Those fonts are used exactly to compensate the "stretch" effect on 800x600 skins and to "save" space on the skin (so more information can be in the same space).

Still any Chinese/Japanese/etc font users will certainly appreciate your changes (because their fonts are typically bigger)...

Hi guino, even with the Arial Narrow font set installed there is still bits of misalignment or cutoffs on several screens.

This is the base BMV2 with the arial narrow fonts installed

But as well as correcting the text, it gave me a chance to fix a couple of other niggles, like the non standard exit button on the radio page and taking the date off some of the screens (not as if you need to see it everywhere - the main menu and the apps page is enough imo)

Its much less cluttered and smoother now and just works with standard windows fonts.

plus it gave me a chance to learn the interface much more than just stabbing random buttons would

I guarantee you that the arial narrow fonts are not installed propperly.. attached is what it looks like with the skin from my site... there maybe missalignment here and there but the latest skins from my site do not overlap or cut off the text on any screen (I tested it even resizing the screen to 800x480)... below you see the GPS screen at 800x600, then 800x480 then a cut from the XM screen -- same as audio player).

You probably tried to unzip the fonts directly into the fonts folder (won't work) or used an application to copy the fonts into the folder (wont work either) you must copy the UNZIPED font files into the fonts folder using EXPLORER or it will not install the fonts correctly. If you do this correctly you should see a windows popup with status on installing the fonts..

I believe It's a problem of the Internationalization. It happened the same to me and I activated/desactivated (i don't remember) Internationalization, and I saw Arial Narrow just like Guino says.

I dont know what you mean about installing from the zip file - I used the ctl panel/fonts/file/install fonts method, thats the microsoft recommended way of doing it anyway... they are installed properly, ive just gone over it again to check.

I think where the confusion arises is that you have been testing on a desktop in various modes. If I run RR default BMV2 on this monitor in 800x600 it all looks great, same in 800x480 too, all spaced right.

However as you know, the EPIA boards running 800x600 but thats squashed onto a 800x480 screen if we use one of the many 7" screens out there- thats when the text starts to run into itself, even with Arial Narrow.

Just resizing the screen on a desktop monitor doesnt do it to mine either- all looks great there.

Internationalisation I had not touched till now- no check against it, and i just tried it with no internationalisation checked and there is no difference, text clashes are the same as my last pictures. Changing between 4:3 and 16:9 makes no difference either- I dont know what else to try.

Well, if you have the fonts installed propperly and the internationalization is disabled the only explanation is that YOU went VOLUNTARILY on the display control panel and changed the fonts to "LARGE FONTS" (higher DPI -- like 120) or so, thus making ALL fonts in the carpc scaled to a higher size -- this would explain all your shots with fonts cut-off and going over other text.. there's no difference whatsoever between running the skin at 800x480 and running it in the carpc (unless the computer is set differently like with the DPI seetting).. this is still something you have done to the machine, meaning it's not a problem with the brushed skins .. but since there are other people that may want to use larger fonts as well, your changes can definitely be of use.

Now youve got me guino .... thats exactly the reason, I totally forgot that I changed the settings to large fonts but on checking indeed its set to large.

Its not a tweak I usually do on XP but on a 7" 800x600, normal fonts are almost unreadable, I did it when I installed and forgot about it till you reminded me to check.

Oh well - I guess they are still useful, there must be others that think that the small windows fonts are hopelessly small - probably best if I re-adjust the thread title and description so people know what they are downloading it for.
