Ok, taking another cue from the Centrafuse boys, i started thinking.

When you're driving, what screen do you have displayed most often?

Well for me, it's my NAVIGATION screen, which i like to have simple volume and playback controls on.

That said, i'd like to donate as much screen realestate at all time to the nav window, while still having a simple way to access all my other screens. So, now Centrafuse is moving to a system where a simple drop down button will expand to show a menu.

Can we do this with Road Runner? Ideally, in this skin, the main menu would host the navigation window, and provide drop down menu to access other menus. Each one of the menus accessible from the NAV screen would have a back button to go directly back to the NAV screen.

    Here's what i mean

    Now with IGuidance Embeded

Now with the sidemenu dropped OVER the Iguidance window.

I know we have pop-up menu capability, like to select skins (ala BrusedMetal's "Appearance" button" or to select GPS programs, but can we designate WHERE on the screen to place those menu's?

    Maybe add a CUSTOMMENU command?

    Thanks,

    Sean

You can make it display anywhere you want, and there are different ways of doing it... the easiest is to make a FULL SIZE image, place the menu where you want it to display (within this big image), then clip out the areas that you don't want to show (The areas around the menu itself)..

Just use "MENU;MyMenu.skin" ... make sure the menu images are FULL SIZE... and clip off the areas you don't want to be displayed (of the image the menu is inside) using the Cxx,xxx.... definition on the .skin file... read up on it in Skin Commands.txt...

Whats with the CF-style buttons (play, rew, ff, etc?) i really think they are bulgy and counterintuitive, but I see more and more skinners using them... is it cause they are easy to obtain or are they really that succesful?

And about your initial question, I think there was a skin that did something similar with flash, dont remember where I saw it though... but using MENU is prolly quicker than flash, and less machine-heavy

    Really? Why?

95% or more of my drives I know where I'm going, I only need directions on 5% or less of my trips.

If I don't need directions, why would i have the navigation screen up? I don't need to see where I am on streets that I'm on every day...

I usually have the MP3 Music screen up (or XM radio screen sometimes if I'm listening to that).. maybe the winamp visualizations I'll pop fullscreen sometimes, but I hardly ever have navigation up.. why would you? To see where your car is, even though you know where you are? Or because you go to unknown destinations all the time?

    Just curious.

Well sure, if you get pulled over you can pop it up.. but I'm assuming "pulled over" falls into the "happens less than 5% of the time I drive" category, along with going to unfamiliar places.

I use the idle command in my audio skin files to default back to the main menu, that way it is only one click to get to the GPS if I need to quickly.

I agree, I use a skin with a GPS button on the Audio skin files so GPS is only a click away, but I hardly ever have GPS open, and was just curious as to why one would.

For the record I do like the look of the silver skin, would just prefer the audio skin where the GPS one is in that 3rd picture.
