Skin Tweaks Thread : Minor Modifications

Any of the scripts and such that can help others is no problem to me at all. I just ask that it is mentioned for private use for anyone that wants, and not for commercial use, selling it as part of a package ect.
This thread is a place to discuss and post minor modifications to skins out there just for functionalities sake. As a thread it might not take off but who knows. So here goes.

    Stuck on Wait.skin
Now in a properly setup system you should not encounter this problem. But I have since my setup is not 100%. The problem arises if for some reason a plugin/app fails to load and you end up stuck on the wait.skin. happened alot for me trying to get CDRip working. Because of this I went out of my way to modify the skin untill I fixed this problem. If the offending plugin/program failed to load theres no reason you should be forced to stay on that wait screen. Before I had to ctrl+alt+del roadrunner to get out of this.

Solution : Add an invisible button that allows you to cancel the wait.skin and return back to Road Runner.

    Code:
    1: Open up wait.skin
2: Add a button line above the /end statement
    3: Save and enjoy!

    MEDIACAR Skin
    MEDIACAR "wait" Skin
    wait.jpg,wait.jpg,wait.jpg,wait.jpg

    B01,0,0,800,600,"CANCEL","Cancel"

    END
If you copy my code above and use a different screen resolution you might want ot change the highlighted values above.

By adding this button if you're ever stuck on wait.skin and want to go back just touch anywhere on the screen. The button is big enough that it fills the entire viewable area. Meaning you dont have to hunt for it if you forget where it is. An alternative to this is making the button a long strip along one of the edges of the screen.

If you have any other tweaks or modifications feel free to post them. I'll post more as time goes by.

O.K. let me see if I got this right. This thread is for RR Skinning Tweaks that people have added for specific functionality additions.

So let's say I use the launch skin to load the Winamp Library for ShoutCast Radio. I use a modified RR Source code (that Guino doesn't support) that allows RR to display Winamp ATF coding. Unfortunately, on some of these stations the Winamp playlist data changes three or four times during a single song.

So to update the currently playing playlist item of the RR audio screen when I'm listening to Internet Radio, I have timers set to reloadlist every 20 seconds. I also have a hidden button on all my other screens for reloadlist that I use to manually update the TRACKNAME label.

Its too bad that winamp has no way to update the whole playlist ala XM radio, but so far my only workaround is to set scantime to 30 seconds and scan the playlist allowing the timer to reloadlist on each playlist item. Works pretty good for short playlists. For long ones I know the songs at the top of the list have changed by the time I get to the end of the scan.

I just thought about this again and wonder how the major RR Coders feel about posting some of their work here. For instance, just about every new skin release nowadays has some new feature that either noone else thought of or was never mentioned.

For example, JohnWPB just added "Restart Song" to his Digital FX audio player skin. Its simply a button with "Stop||Play" as its code, but something many have asked for in the past.

There are hundreds of little tweaks like this around but I don't expect the coders to come here and log them, so I wonder if they mind someone else doing it for those little tweaks we feel are significant.

Hell I track Chucks skin and download every new version just to pick his code apart to see what he does that I may want to add to my skins. He's very helpful and extremely talented, but I wouldn't expect him to announce each new tweak in his thread and here. The new LSXVoid has a .NET dropdown that uses websites I've never heard of but are great simple solutions to issues (embedding IM, Atlas, RSS, Movie Times)that I've seen discussed repeatedly in these forums.

So what say the experts, can we mere mortal extol the merits of your genius!

    My favourite tweak:

Edit the EXIT button on WBrowser.skin so that it reads:
    B10,710,0,90,85,"CLOSEWINDOW;Microsoft Internet Explorer||Exit","exit"
This will close IE every time you exit the skin and clear the cache if you make the appropriate settings in IE.

This will allow you to edit the buttons loading your specific pages so they read like this instead of just saying "WEB":
    B05,[x],[y],[h],[v],"LOAD;WBrowser.skin;RUN;C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe|http://www.getmethere.co.uk/temp/trafficapp.html;Microsoft Internet Explorer;TRAFFIC"

That's wild! I have the exact same thing that I came up with over a year ago when I started creating animated weather radar screens! I didn't consider it significant for this thread because the new webplugin takes care of all that.

OBTW, LS has come up with an inventive implimentation of the wbrowser/webplugin that I intend to emulate. He has subfolders, each with a slightly different wbrowser.skin file. For each button that initiates one of these different browsers, a script is initiated first to copy the wbrowser.skin to the main skin directory and then runs the plugin. Imagine the possibilities!

i have no problems with anyone ripping apart my skins and displaying the sticky guts for the world to see Just clean up when your done, it gets messy in there.

this is a nice idea for a thread also, should show some people how to tweak out there own skins.

FYI those buttons are also configurable, if you click and hold the buttons in any of the drop down list, another list shows up with a list of command to replace the item in the list. So there are a bunch other websites that are available that aren't in the list.

Yeah, saw that, but the ones above were mentioned cause I've seen discussion on the board about different ideas to achieve what you make so simple.

O.K. sounds like LS gives his blessing, now to hear from Chuck, JohnWTB, and maybe CDR.

good to see some people like the idea for the thread. I too was concerned with using other skinners work picked apart in here. Which is why I went with a simple exit button for functionality tip.

really i'd like to see this turned into a knowledgebase of skinning tips
