have you looked at the SETVAR command set. SETVAR, SETVARBYCODE etc etc
I've read the Skin Commands and I know you can define and save variables to rr.ini and be able to use them on the next startup w/o having to redefine it all over again.
However, if I edit rr.ini using RR config and save, any custom additions made to rr.ini would be lost.
Is there a way to define variables RR can use outside of rr.ini?
I'm sure someone has done this before, but I can't seem to put the right keywords together in a search.
If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.
TIA!

you can run RRConfig and not loose any of the custom entries you've defined. If that is happening to you there is a bug somewhere, ive never seen it overwrite the whole file.
What you want is skin.ini
its treated the same as rr.ini but is located in your skins dir.
you can save info to this file using
SAVETOSKIN
OSKTOSKIN
and a few other commands, check the latest beta version of RR for the release that supports this and also the skincommands.txt that has all the commands.

Yeah, I have. SETVARs are not persistent. Once you close RR, I lose the definition and have to redefine again via OSKTOVAR.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to specify drive paths for different removeable media and browse music/video using RR on-the-fly w/o having to hard code drive paths into specific buttons into the skin itself. This way, I have one button to set the drive, one to browse.
I want to be able to set it and leave it until I need to change it again w/o having to exit RR w/o the use of a text editor and KB.

I'm on RR build 11/12/06 and RR Config doesn't overwrite the whole file. I've set 3 custom variables. When I edit and save rr.ini using RR Config, I lose 2/3 variables I've set and it's always the first 2 variables.
I don't think I've seen those commands in 11/12 Skin Commands, but I can't be sure. Right now, my 1 of 2 test machines is only on 10/8 build. My other test machine is down and don't have the update handy.
I'll go poking around for the latest beta.
Thanks!

To use the SAVETOSKIN command, you need to be using the LATEST RR
Also, you need to use a Variable that is not used by RR already. This is why it may be overwriting your var when you save from the RRConfig utility.
For instance, I think everyone has seen this, you change the skin from within the skin itself. Then if you load and save with the RRConfig, it will revert to the original skin, by writing it to the rr.ini.
Try using something like MyMusicPath instead of MusicPath.

Sadly, that wasn't the case. Here are my variables:
cddrivepath
flashdrivepath
cameradrivepath
None of which were being used by rr.ini. What I have found is that after rr.ini gets saved, it "ENTERs" two blank lines after the last line. Those two lines are the location of the new set variables. It doesn't matter the order in which it is defined, it's always the first two that gets deleted.
I just found the beta, as well, and am gonna try it out.

Hi Sal R,
have you looked at using a BROWSE.RRL file in your Music Path. This is a simple file that allows you to define Virtual drives, mine is defined like this
C:\Documents and Settings\johnstonek\My Documents\My Music\MP3;Main Music Directory
D:\;CD / DVD
E:\;USB Drive
This is displayed in the browse window like the attached.
OOPs ! Didn't spot your response !
Anyways, one for reference.
cheers
