And will it come with the option to power it from usb, or use the usb to switch it on and off? Or with that come later with a firmware update?

OBDLink will feature dual power, meaning it can draw power from OBD or USB. This option is hardwired, meaning that when left connected to OBD, the scan tool would still draw power from OBD. The reason you would want it powered from the USB is so that you can upgrade the firmware by connecting it to the USB port of your computer.
We are planning to add a "sleep" mode to one of the future releases, which will reduce power consumption by ~60 mA. You can also clip the leads of the "STATUS" LED, which will save you another 10 mA. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reduce the power consumption to zero with the current design.
