Hi,
I have problem with COM port opening.After new XP installation everything works fine till I turn the computer off.After next start up i become message "COM port could not be opened" .I have tried change the port number ,install new drivers from FTDI and STN Finder,unfortunately with no success.
I have attached a picture of STN Finder log.I don't understand how is possible,that
com port is allready opened.This is fresh installation of Windows XP with touchscreen
and wifi adapter via USB connected.Every suggestion would be very appreciated.

I had that problem, too. There's other software on your system that's opening the serial port. Even thought you don't think there is, I assure you that something's doing it :-)
In my case, the offender was the Palm Desktop software. To fix that, I opened the palm software configuration and told it to only check for devices on USB or bluetooth, and ignore serial devices.

I think Gary is right. Can you go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, and take a screenshot of your ports?

Because on unix, when I want to find out what program has a device/file/network port/whatever open, I use lsof and it tells me.How's that "on the topic? "
On windows I had to spend ages rooting around to find out what application had my serial port open.

Hi, I'm back. I have made some tests.This time I have installed clean system and the ElmScan drivers with some other programs first and then I have made system back up with Acronis TrueImage. At this point everything works fine. After installation of other drivers/programs no matter if touchscreen,Bluetooth or any other drivers or programs like Centrafuse, The ElmScan 5 USB stops working with the same message "COM port could not be opened" . I want to mention that the same situation is on my laptop. It's very frustrating, that I can not solve this problem by myself. Please HELP

I have the same situation with Windows 7. It either says it cannot open the COM port or that the device couldn't be initialized.
Bad news for me. I was thinking,that upgrading on win 7 could resolve my problem
