    Fooch:

That's cool, I guess I will have to figure something else out, then. I have XM (which I may or may not care about-- I just got the car, and I get 3 months free...). Plus the bluetooth has a microphone just above the rear view mirror, and is integrated with the steering wheel. I'd like to keep those both alive, so I think my first approach will be to retain the factory head unit.

Now I have to find a way to get an auxiliary input in there. I know Soundgate makes some stuff, but not sure if they fit this car.

As for getting an LCD screen in there, I'm a little apprehensive about hacking up the cubby where it would go, though I assume that's the only way. Someone could make a good living providing ready-made cubbies for these things for different car models.

I'm considering putting the PC under the passenger seat, but not sure how good the ventilation would be under there. Short of that, I'd use one of the little compartments behind the seats to house the PC. I'm also going to add a PCMCIA card and get internet in there, but haven't selected a service provider yet (will have to factor price/coverage/speed/hatred of Verizon into my decision).

Anyone have any suggestions based on my plan? Anyone think my ideas suck?

I'm curious what you did to cut the opening in the cubby area? I'm very concerned about doing that and making it look perfect. I really want it to look factory in my Z too. Mine is also an 07.

    Thanks,

    Ross

I didn't cut anything. I ordered the Navi parts from a dealer in California. There are three parts that you need to buy.

68499-CF40A - Finisher Piece (VERY hard to find, had to order from Canada)
68260-CF42A - Instrument panel (This is the main console piece)
28395-CF405 - Electrical - Navigation system components (this is the button piece/Switch Assembly)

And here is the wire diagram to wire up the lights on the switch assmebly so they light up like factory instead of a dark void.

Really, that's interesting. How much did all those parts run you? Are those from an 07 or older car? I'd heard they changed it for the 07 and you couldn't use the old 03 style cubbies anymore. Not cutting = good to me (assuming those parts didn't cost an arm and a leg!)

Also mind posting where you ordered from?

    Thanks,

    Ross

I got the parts from West Hills Nissan in Cali. The website I belive is www.mynismo.com. look for OEM parts. And the '03 cubbies will only fit in the '03 - '05 Zs(used to have an '05 with one) the '06 and '07 are changed. so the parts you will be ordering will be the '06-'07 parts. It's more expensive because you have to buy so much stuff. The '03 cubby was like $90 and a $10 finisher and you are done. These parts are about $150 for the dash piece, about $225 for the button piece and I think about $14 for the finisher. I couldn't find the finisher anywhere except ONE dealership in Canada and in Canada they are $69 and it cost me $20 to ship it to me. And when I bought it it was the last one in Canada and it went on national backorder. So as far as I know, USA and Canada are on national backorder.

Wow, that's more than I'll probably spend on the whole project! Having done it do you think it's a must to do it that way or will I be able to cut the dash in the way I need? I don't mind it being recessed a little and I sorta like the cubby giving it a little sun shade....

    Thanks,

    Ross
