theres a video in for the rear view cam. Does anyone have any ideas of how I should approach this?
short answer,:that thing is not good for pc use really at all.
ok, the problem with a device like that is, even though it is a 800X480 native resolution lcd panel, the lcd panel itself needs a controller for it to actualy be connected to anything. the controller used in that thing is a controller that takes a composite signal & converts that into something that can be used on that lcd. the screen can do nothing without a controller & the included controller doesn't have the abilty to take in the native resolution of that lcd at all, so you can't just connect it to a pc like a normal 800x480 monitor.
the only practical way would be to first convert the pc output to composite, feed that to the composite in where the controller will then upscale that to display on the screen & at that point it'll look like crap. to do anything further would require major custom work & probably wouldn't be worth what it would take to try & access the lcd directly with a different controller, & even if you did manage to actually pull that off, you'd need a custom switching network if you still want to access the original internal features of the unit too.
I played with thought of trying to do this on an alpine d900 in my last car, but your talking a lot of custom electronics that may or may not even be doable in the first place, you wouldn't even know until you take one apart & seeing if the lcd interface is even identifiable as lvds, ttl or another propritary interface like what's used on those cheaper portable dvd players which is niether, & then knowing that & finding out the specs of the lcd itself see if a controller that would interface the lcd is even available. would never be worth the R&D to pull it off even if it is possible really unless it was some kind of increadable super wide viewing angle sulight readable really special lcd to justify that, which of course it's not
to use it composite would be miserable & about useless really in my opinion, it'll work & display an image from your pc, but it will be too blurry & messed up looking.
if this has a video out then probably, if not, alpine has there hub system, & kenwood has something similar, where the setup is modular & you can use what ever screen you want & have that unit provide whatever you want from it, nav or radio or whatever, but then can switch to the pc whenever you want too

But, this... this is just insane. I just essentially time-traveled 3 years over the course of reading this non-stop for the past 5 hours, my eyes are red ! Never in my life have I encountered such an interesting, in-depth and devoted chronicling of what appears to be a part-time hobby. Not even in my whole life of reading automotive magazines have I seen anything this cool. Where did you learn to do all this ? You're not your average body shop guy, I mean, in this thread alone there are at least 5 mini-tutorials ranging from how to weld plastic to computing to painting to customizing suspensions.... someone already mentioned a tv show half-jokingly, but you could make such an interesting youtube-based DIY channel with just your car alone (maybe featuring other members from time to time, just a thought). In any case, this was greatly inspirational to me and thank you so much for sharing all of it.
Your car looks so nice. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody at Porsche took design cues from this thread... the first thing that jumped to mind when I saw your tan interior was: Cayenne. The custom dropped suspension & big wheel setup plus twin turbo really puts this truck up at the top (not to mention the computer and sick custom dash).
I just have 2 questions for you. First, what did you study to learn all of this ? Second, would you pleaseeee do a tutorial on how to do a pro paint job ?

ha, thanks man. it's not that hard to learn to do anything you want to do if you really want to do it bad enough I guess. nothing beats genuine desire & hands on practice & experience. the difference between failing & succeeding in anything is not giving up. I've seen so many people say oh, I can't do this, I did try but I just can't... that's just BS. no one can do something before they learn how to do it.
I believe that I can do anything that I really want to do, believing is half the battle. no one can ever tell me that I can't do something when I think that I can, & believe me I've had many people at times tell me that I can't do something, sometimes even so called "professionals", but I love to prove them wrong sometimes I wish I had the real desire to be rich, because I honestly believe that if I really wanted that bad enough then I can be rich, but honestly, I guess I don't really want that bad enough for it to be a passion or a driving force, so I'm not. you've got to really want to do something bad enough that nothing will stop you, just kinda wanting it isn't enough, that's about the best advice I can give
I know a lot of guys look at my fx & think that it's radical or that it's all that, but to me I don't think that I've done anything radical to the fx yet. the screen/pc install is probably the most impressive & intense thing that I've done to the fx so far, but even that is not so radical to me, most other things are just kinda tinkering & while being modifications I don't think of them as extreme really, in my eyes so far all of the mods I've done are kinda tame & mild.
now I have finally started on a mod that is a bit more radical than anything I've done to the fx so far. I have pulled the drivetrain & harnesses out of the fx in prep for a motor swap to the same motor as the new 09 fx's VQ35HR motor, twin throttle bodies & 7,500rpm redline, much more stout motor that can handle some good power. this is a little radical because of all of the differences in computer controls & because of all of the complications of the can buss controls. I want to retain traction control & the vehicle dynamic control (vdc) system too. this too is something that I have even had nissan techs tell me would be a nightmare to even consider... I laugh at that though, they have no idea of the determination I can have when I start something like this. failure is just not an option, I have to believe that 100% to attempt something like this, & I do believe this 100% too.
that is truly all it takes, believing in yourself & not considering failure an option. that & being willing to do & learn whatever it takes too, also not giving up. if you do something & don't get the results you want, try again & again & again. you will have to learn from your failures & improve with each attempt. eventually you will be able to do what you couldn't do before. sorry, I really don't mean to sound like I'm blowing my own horn or that I think that I am better than anyone else, I do also believe that anyone can do the same if they really want to bad enough, same with everything else I do. anyone can do it with the right mental outlook & determination. I've only got 10 fingers & 2 hands just like anyone else, they bend & grip just like anyone else too, it's the mental beliefs & determination that are really the only difference. of course experience helps, but I've been this way all my life so I have a bunch of experience too, but before I had experience I had to just learn & try just like anyone else, that is what brings the experience in the first place.
ok, enough preaching.
to complicate this swap a bit more, I'm also building my own twin turbo setup for this drivetrain swap. I'm building my own headers & pretty much everything from scratch. I've looked at all the twin turbo kits out there but none of them have really been what I would consider awesome for the fx. all of the existing twin turbo setups are built for 350Z's & are designed around the limitations of a 350Z fitments. the FX has so much different space to work with & I really want to take advantage of that & build an install that just sits right with me. if it's not available then the only choice is to build it yourself
these are the turbo's I'm using... I'll go into more detail of this setup later, but it is going to be a pretty radical & slick install
oh, one other thing. I guess it does help to just be a sick fcuk with twisted priorities, otherwise I would have been better off concentrating all my efforts on just being rich & then I could just go out & buy the sickest cars... guess I get more satisfaction out of building it myself though. can't even begin to tell you all the reading & learning I had to do to have enough knowledge to even begin to select turbo's & design my own twin turbo setup. I'd rather read & learn than watch tv though, so becoming a turbo expert was just another task that just had to be done
