I love projects like this, where the process pictures look like it's gonna be all wonky and crooked. And then, as if by magic, it looks OEM.
Really nice job, keep it going![]()
Good stuff Allen.
I guess you could wire a relay to disconnect the solar panels so as you needn't worry about switching each time.....
I keep toying with the rear view camera. Hmmmmm...
Really tidy install. Keep us posted!

Great install. How did you get the reverse camera to come on automatically?
1995 Pontiac Trans Am 5.7 L LT1 V8
9.2" TView Touchscreen
Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop and dock
Intel Centrino, 768MB RAM, 80 GB HD
Panasonic BD-5300 Head Unit
Flowmaster Exhaust
Nothing beats the sound of a V8 that likes to speak up...
I am not the OP, but I will tell you how I use my reverse camera. I wired it to the power supplied to the reverse lights. When I put the car in reverse the camera powers up.
With my Xenarc screen, there is a feature where I put aux 2 input in a priority mode, where when it receives signal, it overrides the other inputs.
So when I put my car in reverse, the camera comes on, and switches my Xenarc screen to that input.
Very nice. One of these days I'd like to do something similar in my VR4.
Have you heard of 3SX? It's a 3000GT shop in Charlotte, NC...I worked there for 5 years.
Hiya, sorry for the late reply. Yes I have heard of 3sx. I would use them a lot as their products are excellent, unfortunately their international shipping rates are ridiculous even for small products. I'm a member of the UK owners club and everyone says the same. Real shame.
How did you do the reverse camera thing? I also have a VR4 and am currently installing my CarPC.
Its wired into the reverse lights, so it switches channel when you select reverse, or you can just change channel manually for it on the screen all the time, which is pretty cool at night
So it's been a while since I last played around with the carpc. I only started off buying a new bluetooth adapter for it and have ended up with a whole shopping cart![]()
So here's the update so far....
I've installed the new bluetooth dongle. This was because the old one wasn't connecting to my iPhone properly. This together with a new frontend called Centrafuse means the whole system runs much smoother. Benefits include:-
-Handsfree works all the time, every time.
-I can sync music from my iPhone, via bluetooth through the car speakers. This includes podcasts, video audio and any app you happen to have running at the time (tv/radio etc)
-HandHeldHalo datalogging has now been implemented into the main menu.
-Satnav upgrade.
-Video playback is much smoother.
-Simpler command menu for easier operation while driving.
So once I got this sorted I unfortunately caught the bug and ordered a few other bits and pieces, including an iPhone cradle for the windscreen.
My trackball mouse was starting to wear badly and cracks were appearing from the road vibration. After a re-think I came up with an alternative, a mobile mousepad as you can see here...
This was much thinner than the trackball and easier to use, so I decided it could sit on top of the old ashtry hole. I had some black plastic lying around so a quick session with the dremmel and voila...
The new pad is so much easier to use than the trackball, its just like the versions you get on a laptop.
