    01 Audi A4 1.8T Sport w/ Quattro - First timer =]

I stumbled across this site a few months ago and browsed through some of the member's projects. I thought it was pretty neat but I didnt have the cash to put together a system, so I put it out of mind. Then one day I got an old hand-me-down laptop from my mother and I decided to give it a shot. It's been about 6 or 7 weeks and everything is finally functional and stable (for the most part). Things arent as pretty as they could be, but I think it's pretty darn good considering I'm a beginner at pretty much every aspect of this. So here it is:

    Dell Inspiron 1200 Laptop 14.1" -free =D
    -Celeron 1.4Ghz
    -768mb pc100 or 133...i forget
    -dvd-rom drive
    -30gb 4200rpm hd
    -Integrated video
    -Busted soundcard on mobo
    -Busted integrated keyboard
    -2 functioning usb ports

ebay usb gps receiver - $40 shipped
ebay 14.1" Touchpanel from Hong Kong - $95 shipped
ebay usb soundcard - $9 shipped for 2 units
ebay flexible keyboard for programming - $8 shipped
    usb gamepad - $10
misc fab. parts (screws, paint, bondo, shrink, wires etc.) - $100
    150W Rhino Inverter - $25
    _________
    Totaled in at under $300

The laptop sits under the glovebox behind a piece of wood that I'm later going to shape and carpet to match...right now it's pretty obvious and ugly. I extended the display by about 6 ft with a printer cable and added some extra wires to the bundle for the touch panel and a usb port on the display bezel.

It was very important to me that I be able to return the system to stock if I wanted to. I have the Audi Symphony system so I really couldnt justify removing it anyway...plus I didnt have to buy a display this way (only the touchpanel) Audio is going through the tape player with one of those little adapter thingies and all the wires go through a hole where a single cup holder used to be. I made a wooden bracket for the display that slides into that hole alongside the wires. The Inverter and power brick are under the passenger seat with the wires hidden under the floormat.

    Pics:
These were taken at night w/out tripod or flash, so they arent too great...If anyone wants daytime ones I'll take some.

Overall I'm pretty happy with everything. I didnt use a frontend because all the ones I've looked at a)have way too many features/not the features I Want (dont use xm, radio, internet...) and the interfaces I've seen are pretty ugly. please dont take offense to that, I just have different tastes I guess. My solution was rklauncher, a mac OS style dock at the bottom of the screen that lets me leave all my apps in fullscreen mode and just jump between them by tapping the icons - clean and simple

I do realize that the display covers my radio, but I have access to the volume knob which is the only part of the radio I need. The climate controls are under the display and also accessible. The only item that I lose easy access to is the hazard switch (I can still reach behind it and press it, I just cant see it directly)

    How did I do?
