BTW guys, hopefully our Southern California meet actually happens this time and I'll be able to meet some of you there! --and you can all make fun of me for not taking my dash apart!!
I've used a couple different laptops in my car for the last few years but they always had their problems. First of all, most of the displays were fairly dim (considering I only installed USED laptops as they were going to get a lot of abuse sitting in my car -and the risk of being stolen). I'd say the most expensive laptop I've installed cost me $250. Anyways, besides the dim screen that made it a little hard to see during the day while wearing sunglasses, I had to deal with the screen waving back and forth if I drove over any bumps or dirt roads...
So I mounted a 15" desktop display a few months ago and LOVED it! The brightness of even the lowball Dell display was quite easy to see. The only problem now was the fact that the keyboard was no longer sitting right where my had was -now it was sitting in the passenger seat and soon was going UNDER the seat. I needed a touchscreen! So for the next 3-4 months, I watched and lurked eBay for just the right deal... And here it is:
Here's the original LAPTOP version:
...and here's how I've modified the mount and cabling:
Here's a YouTube video of it in operation.
Another thing I like about this new mount is that I can pivot the screen to either directly face the passenger if they will be operating the navigation software, or I can pivot it flat between the two seats so that it won't interfere with the passenger airbag. I have distant plans to install a dedicated carputer from but my budget is just not there right now.

Hey,
I think that looks WAAAAAAY better than the laptop install!
Nice job!
Raf
Yeah, I think I've gotten a LOT less flack for this buildup than when I mounted my laptop. Thanx Raf!! Hope I see you soon!
