    Nice setup but a router is over kill.

    You can easily wire up an external switch from your laptop. Then you could use a 555 timer to get the laptop to turn on when the ignition does. All for under $30.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but a few things you should note:
    1. You are commenting on a Car PC I built 6 years ago. The Car PC is long gone, and so is the car.
    2. Using a 555 timer would have required me opening up the laptop case and wiring onto the power button, something I was not willing to do on a brand-new laptop. Using Wake-on-LAN required no mods to the machine.
    3. The router cost me $35 and provided the functionality of a switch and the Wake-On-LAN sender, and later on I added an internet connection so it provided a wifi host as well.
