My main problem regarding teh OBD is that I have to build a "anything->usb" converter first, using a PIC, because I have no serial/parallel ports available. Otherwise I could just buy an OBD-serial cable for a few euros.

Regarding the false floor, I'll start building it next month. Just a small detail, I don't want to drill holes in my car, so I don't know how will I secure the new floor (OSB or MDF) to the car's floor (the steel).

try M3 tapes with glue on both-sides, it can hold anything - or just fit it tight, because astra trunk is very complicated and it may hold the false floor by itself. Or you can use something like this: http://cartft.com/catalog/il/922 if you want to make it demountable.

well, about OBD - I've recently bought some cable from ebay for few euros, but it worked only with Opel Tech2, which doesn't offer live-diag. Any other software didn't work also! Be careful and try it before buy

Thanks for the info! And, don't worry, I won't buy anything, I'm off to do it myself.
If I fail, then... we'll see.

Hi, I'm back with a little update.
Here's my false floor in the trunk.
I used OSB sheets and pine wood, basicly what I had laying around at home.

The laptop sits on bits of packing sponge, for dampening, and held in place by the velcro stripes.

With the plexiglass hatch in place, and the floormat trimmed and glued:

The result is a bit disappointing in the sense that it starts to move away from the factory-look I was after. I'll probably toss away the hatch and replace it with floormat-covered OSB, to blend in with the rest of the floor. And I'll replace the floormat with a black one to mach the car's interior.

quite a nice project! if the laptop was smaller you could probably fit in the glove box. would that work for you?

The first, desktop system was inside the glovebox. Unfortunately the laptop didn't fit inside. I'm happy with the hardware setup, now I'm focused on the software side, where I'm having a really hard time setting up iGO+bluetooth+gps receiver.
Will be back soon with some new photos, as I finished fabricating the panel for the power-button, USB ports and status leds!

    McFly,

    Nice install .

I've got a Car PC installed into my Vauxhall Astra Mk4 1.6 SXi (no worklog as yet ) and have finally got around to the dash fabrication. I'm keen to know what you did about the hazard warning light. Did you manage to fit it in the cigarette light slot?

I must get around to making my worklog soon!

    Thanks,
    Dave
