A slipring is the thing inside your steering wheel that connects the steering wheel electronics to a connector in the dash. It rolls on and off when you turn the steering wheel.

i was confused by this term slipring. its actually called an srs cable reel. and yes thats what i used. i drive an rsx and the cable reel for that only has 8 wires and i need 11 (vga+touch+power line). so i actually got 1 from honda for a honda civic si. that has about 19~ wires on it. had to take it apart and do alot of work to solve to magnetic interference/ cross talk between the wires that was causing a very blurry image. lol after about 11 hours of anger i figured that part out with a very simple solution. but all is well

Aside from the safety issue, this is turning into a very interesting project. I'd love to have a keyboard (with IBM-style TrackPoint stick, if possible) set into the steering wheel, probably above -- but on a level with -- the airbag. I won't give up the airbag, but I've assumed previously that adding a keyboard meant, in a collision, that I'd get a faceful of keyboard delivered with the airbag. If I survived, those would be interesting scars to explain; I might even have to change my name to Letter-man.

This gives me some hope I could get that keyboard in there safely so it wouldn't interfere with the airbag's operation. Hmmmm. A wireless keyboard there might be very interesting.

Now I'm pondering whether I could mount a fixed keyboard independent of the wheel. On the Scion xB, that wouldn't obscure any controls or instruments. Hmmmm.

Next time you don't know what something is, either search or ask before summarily dismissing it.

I'll jump in on the "I'd rather have an airbag than a chest full of electronics" bandwagon, but to each his own. Cool project otherwise though...

Actually, I thought it was called a clock spring, not slip ring?

The name slipring comes from older cars that had it. Back then it was a ball bearing or a brush that rolled over a metal ring. Hence the name slipring.

In Dutch it's still called that and Enforcer used this name too so I assumed the name slipring was a common name in English.

But whatever, I'm looking forward to pics of how you managed to do it. Nice project.

I think slipring is the name BMW use, hence the reason myself and bimmerstyle recognise it
