Now the only thing I am not liking is that the sides are sharp. I would have thought since you were fiberglassing, they would have been rounded? I dont know what look you are going for though, maybe you like sharp?

the width is pretty tight between the two seats. This is designed for 6U rack rails, i supposed I could have used 4U rack rails and kept the base width and molded it to slope. I think it would be easier to shape and hide imperfections. My biggest worry here is all those sharp angles and I might not be able to get it all squared up. I suppose I could still have it wrapped with stiched vynil if all else fails... but even then i'm not sure how it will look with all the square edges....

I could just sand the edges to give them a rounded appearance as well... that alone might help me finish this out with a better look. I just don't know how i'd go about rounding the edges in a way that would be uniform. Like is there a special tool or sander i'd use?

Or... maybe even just carpet it and use this in the meantime while I think of another design lol.

Well I will teach you a trick I used. When I pulled apart the center van console, I noticed a technique that they used. Basically they use plastic to hid the square edges. I tried it with both items on my truck and it worked. Here are pictures.

    Rear Hatch:

As you can see I didnt even bother to connect the corners. I let the plastic cover it up.

    Completed:

Center Console: The base I made was wider then the top part. So I used the plastic to make a clousure for the gap.

    Completed:

See what is nice about wrapping is that you can use odd methods to get the look you want, even if it doesnt look good. Then once the padding and vinyl go on, its all covered. If you do go the vinyl route though, make sure you take the padding into account. My console barely fit because I didnt.

    Me Likey

Had i know what a pain this fiberglass would be, i'd probably just tried the vynil. I wanted to save money and time dealing with somebody who does fabric stuff, and here I am with a akward looking console. I'm gonna work on it a little more to see how it turns out with more sanding and a coat of primer.

Shame I didnt choose the vinyl route from the get go as my tuition told me. My gf wanted to paint it. the added thickness of the fiberglass and body filler AND vinyl and padding might be an issue. I could always cut up some more wood to make a new console.

But thanks a lot for that hint and pointing that out to me. I mean i seen those pictures but didnt really analyze them as such!

Knocked down the sides some more with a sander and fitted to truck to see how it works. Probably drive around for the rest of the week to make sure it doesn't crack on me.

The fiberglass shouldnt crack, bondo will, if you do decide to use bondo over the fiberglass to smooth it out, dont apply it too thick, put just enough to fill any imperfections, looking good!!!

Thanks for tha advice. I spent a lot of time sanding the fiberglass with 60 grit and changed out paper often and found that it sanded down really nicely. I was worried at first becuase it did seem pretty wavy, but now its looking a little better.... So far it's survived two days worth of driving. I'm just happy to have toons back in my truck.

I did the center console becuase I figured it's the easiest, safest way to mount the equipment in my truck w/o ruining anything. Ideally, i'd love to have the 10" screen molded to the dash in the middle where the factory radio was, and then the rack mount stuff molded into the dash off to the right. Only thing there is two cup holders and the glove box that I don't use anyway. That would look so sweet and clean and free up the space in between my seats for a proper center console for storage or a middle seat. BUT.... i dont have the skills or knoweledge base and damn that would be expensive to have somebody else do it :-)

Honestly it would look more factory if the screen was in the dash, but the way you have it now is much more usable. You can easily reach the screen. I also think the screen is less of a distraction too.

It survived the week with no cracks, so I'm gonna pull it and sand my @$$ of this weekend and try to get it as smooth as possible and maybe some coats of high build primer so I can start to see what it's gonna look like if I paint it. Alternatively, i have been researching different vinyls or faux leather and padding online. I may try that out if it looks aweful with paint.

Not only that, but I'm still fantasizing about it being on the dash. Started looking into duramix (holy crap pricey) and checking out peoples project where they have molded it in the dash. Could always pick up another dash bezel from the junkyard.

Too many options and I'm not a very decisive person....
