    Motorola Xoom tablet car installation

Finally got my Motorola Xoom installed. This replaced my old carPC which was a Windows XP setup.

Its on a pivoting mount and it connects to an amp under the passenger seat. Volume control via knob installed by the emergency brake (which you can see in one of the photos).

The mount is a Padholdr(http://padholdr.com/), and I had a local shop (http://www.benchmarkmotoring.com/) fabricate the Xoom dock into the mount for both power & audio.

I need to find a cleaning app

As for sound.. I'm no audiophile. I have stock Ford Focus speakers and a budget amp (Jensen 2 channel). Sounds good enough for me. Probably better than my old Dual headunit.

The mount was done well, but I'm not a fan of the mount just being attached to the dash. Do you have any plans to put it INTO the dash, like your old screen was? It would take a lot of fabrication (move vents up a bit, reupholster that section of the dash to accommodate this larger mount) If you can find vinyl to match your original dash, I say you should go for it. Take those middle vents out entirely and you won't need to touch your upholstery if you trim the sides of that padholdr

I like it a lot!!! The integration with the dock was everything, IMHO. I see no wires dangling, and that to me is the most important part.

I think the integration with the dash is over rated, IMHO. I would consider a Ford logo in the center, or removing it altogether. Is there a way for you to tight the tilt mechanism (when needed, if so)? Is that done behind the logo?

Thanks for posting the results, many come here ask for help and never open a thread with the end result.

Now what software are you using? Have you tried tasker, to automate a bunch of stuff (dock, resume last played song, undock, turn off screen, etc.?)

    Cheers,

    RH,

    RH,
I like docks! And that one is compact and functional. Well done.

I had considered getting a mount fabricated into the dash but decided against it due to the age of the car (2005 with almost 100k miles). Also I was not very comfortable with relocating the cliate controls, etc...

The nice thing about the current setup is that much of it could be re-used in another vehicle.

@Rippling, no wires was an important requirement for me - specifically not having to manage them, having them hidden is an added bonus. The apple products have power + audio in one wire, but with the Xoom it reuqires two.

    As for software...

    Music:
Native music player for most played music
    Pandora
Due to the limited storage on the device (32GB internal. 32GB via SD) I am looking at a streaming on-demand music service like Rdio, Rhapsody, etc... for playing the music I rarely listen to.

    Navigation:
Google maps & voice search (i.e. I just say "Navigate to ..." and it find the place and address. Work really well, probably 75% accurate. Thats another detail with the mount, theres a small channel that exposes the microphone.

I had never heard of Tasker until now but it sounds like something I need to look more into. With my carPC I used Girder to automate tasks mapped to an IR remote. Curious if Tasker works with Android 3.0 / tablets.

With Android I have two issues:
    1) I don't have a working remote. I bought a Sony PS3 BD Remote (bluetooth) but I can't get it to pair or connect. I also got a Wiimote which works via the WiiMote Controller IME app but doesnt have enough buttons. I've done A TON of research & experimentation trying to connect it, but no luck. Android's support for the HID profile (specifically L2cap sockets) is non-existent in both their SDK and NDK(Native code). I know its possible because people have been able to pair a Wiimote & 3.0 is able to connect to a bluetooth keyboard.

    2) I'm not sure yet what functionality is exposed for automation. I know I can launch applications etc.. but I'm curious about menu tasks like "Exit Navigation" in Google Maps. It looks like Tasker may solve this.

    3) I need to be able to map remote keys to these automation tasks. Perhaps takser does this too.

Thanks for the heads up on Takser... Getting this remote up and running is my top priority item for this install.

I think I'm going to create a new thread specific to my android 'adventure' (to put it nicely)
