Here is my video demo of my new setup. I shot this with my Droid Bionic...had no idea I was shooting in HD..cool!
Yes... I have quoted myself
So I added to two of my tasker configs for my tablet to send a reply text after I send the timeout text from my Bionic.
Essentially this:
SMS Automation #1:
Send SMS to Tablet "Wakeup" -> Tablet receives text -> Tablet responds to text contents "wakeup" and wakes up display -> Tablet sets display timeout to 30 mins -> Tablet sends reply SMS text to my Bionic "HexxTab: Timeout set 30min"
SMS Automation #2:
Send SMS to Tablet "Timeout" -> Tablet receives text -> Tablet responds to text contents "Timeout" and sets display timeout to 1min -> Tablet sends reply SMS text to my Bionic "HexxTab: Timeout set 1min"
You may wonder what is the purpose of these particular automated tasks. Well I keep my tablet always on. How do I do that you ask? Well... first off I want it always to be ready to "get up and go". I have auto display brightness enabled in addition to power saving mode enabled. That tends to help some plus I have the display timeout which also helps. For the most part my battery lasts a few days without needing to charge so I'm good with that. No need to really go through the exercise to power on/off all the time. When the battery does start to get low then I just connect the USB charger in my car for about an hour then its all good for another few days or so. I have not had any issues with this and it works just fine for me.
So back to the main question on why I have automated tasks for the display timeout. Simply put, to help conserve battery I have the display timeout and rather than having me press the power button to wake it I would rather just automate that. I'm all about technology integrations so I figured why not just create a tasker widget on my Droid Bionic that will text my tablet. Then on the tablet have automated tasks to perform actions based on the content in the text body sent from my Bionic. So just today I added another step on the tablet to text me back after the timeout was set so that I have a confirmation that the text was received and the task was executed.
I'm going to also test this other idea I have based on bluetooth proximity where if I my Bionic is in a certain distance from the tablet then it will send the wakeup or timeout text. That will prevent me from even having to touch my widget to send the text.... technology just makes us all so lazy![]()

I completed my video demo for automating the task where I text my Galaxy Tab to wake up the display and for timing out the display. Pretty simple but useful for me.

The dash install on your latest update is nice. Have you thought of maybe having like a face plate type bezel to hide the corners of the tablet and original bezel. That way you can hide those gaps on the corners? You could make the add on magnetic so its easy to remove. Plus I think it will also hide the fact that the tablet is removable, deturing thiefs.

Yea I was thinking about that but regarding theft if they wanna take it they will. Bezel or not. Fortunately I have insurance on it that covers theft which I thought was cool.
As soon as I get the bluetooth compatibility issue figured out I will be taking it out anyways.

I wonder if the find my drop app and stuff like that deters thieves? I mean, the device has a gps and you/the police/insurance could find it easily then? It works better if you have internet connection in it, but chances are the device is going to be connected eventually. I've seen phone locator pro and theft aware 2.0; they seem to need root acess/install in the system folder so that it can turn on the gps and lock down the device wit erase your stuff.

You just reminded me. Im renewing my ins. and i need to put all my goods on the policy. When I had the second accident and my custom bumper was destroyed, the ins company basically told me to go to h3ll since I didnt report the bumper to them. I would hate for that to happen with my install.
Do those actually work though? I mean if a smart thief simply wipes the device and does a fresh install, the software is gone and therefor cant track. Maybe im wrong because I do not know how the software works?

I actually use the Lookout Mobile Security app and have for a few years. I have it installed on my tablet and phone. It serves as a virus protection and a tracker in addition to you being able to make it send a loud sound. Its cool anyways because it scans every app before its installed and it periodically performs a scheduled scan for malware. It also backs up your data. You can also remotely lock the device and remotely wipe it. I can locate it and it shows on Googlemaps where its at. It actually works great because I tested it inside of my apartment and it found the location. Pretty cool.

Yeah so from a software perspective this is true. Personally I'm not that pressed because I will just lock/wipe it then just get a replacement because at that point a tablet is just not worth the drama like it would be if your car were stolen. It still would be an interesting exercise if you were still able to locate it but that is also dependent on the thief's tech-savyness to know how to do a hard reset to return the device back to default as not all devices have the same button combinations to do this (or if you know how to do that by another means). They would also need the correct USB data cable for it if they were to flash a different ROM or something (if they even know what the heck that is or how to do it).

As if it work, it's an android, so pretty much everything is possible. I still think it's worth it, some are better than others. Most likely before the thief realizes there is some protection, the moment it reconnects to the internet it will get the message to wipe itself out, send gps coordinates and what not, even if the device can be completely erased and usable later, the opportunistic thief will still think about when he goes to sleep at night if the cops won't show up at his door.
Me I would just call the cops and tell them that sensitive information is contained in that tablet from my employee, and that maybe Chinese hackers are behind it and what not, so I'm guessing that given one gps location info it won't cost much for cops to show up. It helps that my town had 5 active cops in active duty at any time with pretty much nothing to do...LOL.
