Hello mp3car.com users! Nice to see so much people building their own in-dash projects. I have a project of my own on a 2003 Audi S3, I may show here soon. Your Altima is looking good, btw...

Please, if you care, help Timur Mehrvarz, the developer of USB Rom (CyanogenMod 10.1 based) for 2012 Nexus 7, probably one of the best tablets and the best rom ever to have for android in-dash installs, who is crowdsourcing support for his new development of the 2013 Nexus 7 USB rom at:

    http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/usb-rom-nexus-7-2013

This way all of us "in-dashers" can benefit from the most recent software and hardware updates out there, that is, if you're planning on getting a 2013 nexus 7...

And maybe if you don't, throw in your 5$ or something, anyway. I have the 2012 N7 and I won't be buying the new model so fast, but I helped support him. Supporting this kind of development is always worth it, IMO...

Here's the current 2012 Nexus7 development thread at Rootzwiki:

    cheers

I have the 2013 Nexus 7 already mounted, the only thing I regret is not having his rom like on the 2012 Nexus 7. I'll gladly donate to him to help with the development.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Edit:- Project is canceled !!

Well.. yeah, unfortunately Timur has prematurely canceled it. It's seems he thought there wasn't just enough people showing their interest in such a project. Too bad.

Maybe we'll see him getting back at it later, or maybe someone else steps in, who knows. I gotta admit, right now, I'm happy enough with my 2012 Nexus, I just wish it had a AMOLED display rather than a IPS one, cuz the colors are so much more vivid and backlight is stronger, to make up for sunlight glare. My next tablet should be an AMOLED fitted one, definitely!..

Yeah personally its hard for me to justify flashing a rom for a frontend. Androids are are pretty customizable as they are and there are tons of apps if you just want a certain look. My last old tablet install worked perfect. I ended up mostly not even using the CarHome Ultra app too much.

I think you're missing the point.. Timur's USB rom isn't about looks or UI customizing. That we only achieve with widgets/launchers. Timur's rom has a custom USB Host mode+power/charging management feature, which was built specially for car-pc type installs. That allows you fast charge while using a USB hub with several devices plugged in, have your tablet enter deep sleep with key off, use USB DAC to improve audio quality, among many more... Something that you don't see, within CyanogenMod itself or other custom roms, and not even all the apps out there in the market could do all that for you. Timur also made a standalone kernel that you can use with stock android, though he only current supports 4.2 JB.

I encourage you and all mp3car.com users to have a look at the development thread at:

don't want to use your thread to discuss this (I don't understand why @xapt3r5 posted on this thread), but USB ROM is not a frontend. It is a complete system management for in-car use. It has a great power manager, usb host support for all tyes of devices (DACs, HDs, webcams..), it can wake up and sleep the nexus without using tasker or other additional software.. it's a great rom for use the nexus in car! You can use the stock launcher or what you prefer, you can use apollo music player or your preferred like poweramp, you can customize almost everything (it's a cyanogenmod, overall).

The Timur project on indiegogo in unsuccessful primarily because he want to pass his great 2012 n7 usb rom on 2013 n7, that at the moment is not so widespread. There are tons of n7 2012 out there and mounted in car and with his great rom installed, but he dropped support on usb rom for this version. Many users would donate for carry on support for n7 2012 rom, for new features like external mic support, more webcam support an so on.

He did not explain why he stopped development on 2012 usb rom, and then started an indiegogo campaign for 2013 usb rom..

TBH he was asking too much, 2000 euros.

    I own both the 2012 and 2013 N7's.

Well, the 2013 is much better in nearly every way, the most important thing is being the screen brightness (583 nits vs 312 nits).
That was a deciding factor on which one to use in my car even though the 2012 version has Timur rom.

BTW AMOLED displays are dimmer than high end LCDs.

I posted that 1st time in this thread cause it was one of the most visited, and with a large number of replies. I figured, if I was to create a new topic of my own, I wouldn't be so sure where to put it, in this forum, and maybe people would just ignore it. Ultimately I wanted to help Timur by

Nah.. I guess he was just making stakes higher so he would gather all the money he could. I think he would've settled for half, maybe less than half of the goal.. Anyway, don't fool yourself thinking the job was being overrated. Developing something of sort is a colossal task and takes ages! There isn't just enough people with a 2013 N7 laying around, wanting to fit it in their dashboards, that's why it's not yet worth the effort...

I'm sorry but I don't agree. I haven't yet seen a LCD display that can beat an AMOLED. Don't forget, LCDs are still based in the same vintage, "shade of grey" process, to make a color darker/brighter. Recent LED backlit display technology, only have helped to slightly improve that. You can go all the way and fit 10000Watt xenon lights behind an LCD panel, if you want, but no way you will get any more color depth and contrast from it. It sure would light up, brighter than the Sun itself, but you wouldn't tell a cluster of dead pixels from a spot drawn in your desktop. AFAIK, nowadays, the best screen color depth currently available is provided only by AMOLED and Plasma solutions. Being, plasma on the big panel's (TV), and AMOLED for small gadgets (ex: smartphones). Do not underestimate LED lights, for they will deliver brighter light as their development and research, grows over the years. LCD's are just cheaper to produce and require less power to operate, that's why they sell better and will probably continue to, for a while.

    @hexxamillion

Sorry for hijacking your thread. I think that's enough off-topic discussion, for now. All has been said about Timur's work. Ask some admin to move the last 8-9 posts, to a new thread, if you want. I would do that myself but, honestly I don't see the need.

    cheers :P
