HTC Flyer Install
This is my second attempt at this. I previously used an Acer mini laptop in the trunk connected to a 7" Lilliput monitor. The monitor was housed in a bezel I made by following some steps on this forum. The laptop gave me problems so I decided to switch to a tablet instead of repeating the same setup. I was able to find a tablet that was a pretty close match in size to the old monitor. I had to do some sanding to the inside of the bezel and build a case to hold the tablet in place but nothing major had to be done to make this work.
So far I really like the tablet setup compared to the laptop. I'm able to use my EVO for wifi tethering. So I can use google turn by turn nav, pandora.. all that android offers.
The job is 95% done at this point. I need to adjust the way it's set a little and get power to the tablet. The standard charging cable adapter was way to long for my setup. The charging port on the flyer is on the bottom/ in landscape mode its on the right side of the tablet. So I wasn't able to plug power in and place the bezel in the dash due to space. I was able to find a micro USB charger that somewhat worked. I had to hack it up to make it fit, I'm hoping to finish that up today.
The tablet is connected to a 3.5 audio jack, connected to the factory stereo which is pushed back behind the bezel. The steering wheel controls control the radio and volume of both the factory radio and tablet. When it's all said and done and I get power going. The tablet comes out of sleep mode when its connected to power by default, so it will turn on when the car is started. I'm using a program that automatically turns the display off when power is disconnected, I can't recall the name of the program off hand but it's in the market. Finally, the bezel is removable so I can take the tablet out when I want... it isn't pretty but I can pull the bezel out and slide the tablet out of it. I added a felt liner to the back of the housing, the picture of the bezel without the tablet below has changed. I found some black felt and added that in place of the brown, it looks much better now. I did this so when I pull the tablet from the car it's not noticeable that the screen is removable if someone was to look in the window.
Tell us more about the HTC flyer! How do you like it so far? Do you have the pen? How is the GPS? What about Bluetooth? Have you rooted it?
How do you like HTC's flyer skin for in car use? Better/worse than stock android?
I think the app you referred to is tasker, to auto turn off the display? You can also set it to toggle pause/play (I can't get this to work for you tube videos/slideshows though, haven't tested also with other video players).
Thanks for the pictures. Add more about the charging setup if you can.

Again, if this is common knowledge for you, please disregard. From what I can gather, the Flyer wants a minimum of 1.67 Amps, so try a 2 Amp or greater charger. Just check out the ratings on the current wall charger and get one that's the same volts, but same or higher Amps.
For instance, I have a dual power port to USB adapter that's rated at 1 Amp. If I use it for my phone only, it's fine, but if I use it for my phone and Ipod Touch, and run wifi tethering, it doesn't always charge both properly. It tries, both say they're charging, but it just doesn't have enough Amps to handle such a large load. If I want to charge both properly, I'll need to either get a splitter and use two 1 Amp chargers, or get a single charger that is 2 Amps.
Hope I've helped. Great job, I am trying to figure out what I will do for a carputer myself - android tablet, Insignia Infocast 8", or a samsung touchscreen & regular computer.... This writeup makes me want to go android.
I got a Galaxy Tab and an iPad that will only charge from a 2A charger. The iPhone charger won't do. The iPad will report not charging, but it's actually very slowly charging, the Samsung will think it's connected to a computer USB port, .5 mA port. I also have a nook color and this one will only charge from it's own cable, even if a std mini usb cable is connected to it's own, or a third party 2A charger. The nook reads the resistance in the cable to detect it's safe to suck 2A, it will slowly charge from a regular mini USB cable though, but at full brightness, it will discharge faster than charge.
This is bad, because I bought a right angle mini USB cable that won't work for the nook...the stock one sticks out a lot!
Thanks for the feedback.. you are correct, the wall charger is rated at 9v 1.67 amps. I tested it and I'm able to use the wall charger with WiFi, gps, and full screen brightness and the tablet charges. The micro usb adapter used for the car is connected to a .5v 1a usb charger. It will charge slowly with the screen off while in the car.. but its very slow. While the screen is on it shows its receiving a charge but loses charge. It appears its losing a charge at a slower rate than it would if it were running on battery alone.
I found the site below, any idea if one of these usb car adapters would work? Rippling, I'm wondering if I would see the same result with the flyer that you saw with the nook. If it won't hurt the flyer I'm going to give it s shot. I have to admit I know very little about electricity.
I gave the tablet a full charge last night then ran it for a good part of the day while on the road and I ended up with around 50% battery tonight, so it got me thru the day. I hate the idea of having to pull it every night to charge it up for the next day but I'm just glad it works:) The tablet now powers on when the car starts and turns off when shut off. That was my biggest concern going with a tablet setup.
Platin, on more minor selling point on going with a tablet (looking past the charging issue:) with my carpc setup I had to run cables from the front of the car to the trunk.. vga audio power etc. The tablet was pretty simple, audio and a partially working power cable. I had to pull up the old usb extension cable I was using for the carpc to use for the tablet. It reminded me of how much work went into trying to get cables under seats and into the trunk.. I don't want to have to do that anytime soon lol. But I honestly think either way you can't go wrong. I like what centerfuse has to offer these days. But I'm stuck on Android, at least until the next best thing comes out lol.
If the specs are right, I think that should work!
Great Idea - HTC Flyer
Hey Im knew this posting, but here goes. I just purchased the flyer three days ago and it's a good you. I was thinking the same as you, to mount it into my car. I couldn't figure out how to make the bezel. For the power I plan to install two usb cigarette adapters or install car power inverter which should power the thing and charge faster, what do you think? How did you make the bezel?
Thanks! I'm going to give it a shot.. now the hard part, ordering then waiting for a package to arrive. I might check radio shack or something first.
If your anything like me you'll love it. The bezel took a lot of effort to make but it was worth it. My best guess, it took about a week of working with bondo sanding and painting to get it done. I originally made a bezel that was flat (if you notice in the picture above the bottom is set slightly back, this is a better angle for me) based around the frame of a lilliput monitor. I basically worked from this forum to make it, some of the people on this board are extremely talented and offer a lot of info. I didn't follow any one reference I kind of pulled from a few posts and made adjustments as needed. I would check the project section and I believe its called the "fabrication" section of this forum for pointers. I'll see if I can find one of the posts I worked from for you.

When I get around to ordering the usb charger adapter mentioned above ill post comments on it. I'll also take a few pictures of my charging setup.
All in all if I could do anything different and could figure out a way to get this done, I'd make it easier to set the tablet in place and remove it. There is a post in the tablet section that shows a dvd kit that was modified for use with a tablet. It looks great and appears to be easy to insert and remove the tablet. The guy did a great job with it. I also watched some clips on YouTube of ipad installs. One person had a custom built bezel that was motorized, that's beyond my skill set but it would be nice.
