Actually the venting has little to do with toxic fumes, it is primarily to prevent explosion.

I looked it up to see, and found out that it's mostly Hydrogen and Oxygen gas that's vented, as well as some Hydrogen Sulphide gas!

    Thank you rray.
Not that I'd wonder why you'd want to vent any fume inside the vehicle - whether explosive, corrosive, or toxic. But irrespective of AutoWiz's question, it's a legal requirement (in most regulated countries etc).

The excuse they give is that they consider explosions to be a safety hazard.
Then there are the secondary reasons like lung corrosion.

Never mind that Hydrogen is the most explosive element and you are producing Hydrogen Gas with the Oxygen it needs to burn... Add a little heat and you don't have to worry about that venting any more...

It is actually a legal requirement in the states as well and can be grounds for some serious fines if you ever get caught without it vented. But then again, those that are willing to put unvented automotive batteries inside their vehicles also are probably willing to put heat blankets on their NO2 tanks on a switch that doesn't turn off on its own and bypass the pressure reliefs...

Just as serious and just as nasty an explosion. Just better hope if you don't vent your battery you are not in the car when it goes. Not to mention all the excessive corrosion to the interior of the car...

lung corrosion must mean toxic fumes, no? for what it's worth, one of the 5 a.s.e. re-certifications I hold is in electrical/electronic systems. along with brakes, engine repair, engine performance, and L1: advanced level engine performance specialist. I build whole cars. for many years, now. these are some pics of my tools and my work and my job. on my own time, in my life, I am AutoWiz, but mon-sat 8am-5pm, I am the vetteXpert.
