2005 TrailBlazer Custom Dash Mounted PC

Ok, while the project has not yet begun physically, I just recently acquired a previous member's CarPC, to install in mine.

I have been lurking on this forum for a little over 3 years now, saw a lot of great things going on, and just never bit the bullet and dove into it head first. Like many people these days, my ideas and desires are much larger than my wallet lol!!

So after getting many ideas throughout the years, I decided to do a random search for my vehicle type back in January (I don't know why I did not see the thread sooner, I really am amazed about this myself), but I found a really awesome install thread started back in 2007. The last posting in the thread was the middle of 2008, and he has not been in the forums since 2011. The OP left his contact information in his final posting, so I took a shot in the dark and reached out to him. VERY quickly I received a reply with lots of information from him, and he offered the item for sale to me, as it was removed approx 2 years ago due to a service issue with his vehicle, and never reinstalled.

I jumped at the opportunity, and Mark sent the item before receiving any form of payment, so as to get shipping costs, which he sent me an invoice for. Mark has been in contact with me via email as well as having a nice long phone conversation with him the other day, and he gave me plenty for information.

I have powered up the unit to check it out, and its just raising more questions for me, as this is my first venture into a CarPC, and the software and other things he had installed on it.

I do not have pictures of my own yet, the install has not begun, but I wanted to start this thread while I had the chance, throw out some links, and hopefully I don't get too many questions to ask, and can find it myself, or post those in a more appropriate forum!

Thanks for looking, I will update soon with pics, and maybe videos if needed. Please see the links below!

What a great head start getting his parts for your install. I look forward to seeing what you tweak on it to make it yours.

Thanks all! I powered it up the other day to toy with it, and had some issues. As this has been my first experience with any of the programs installed on it. As soon as it boots up, the RR program announces that the system, or program, is locked. I cannot click on anything in it.

ALSO, the touchscreen response seems inverted. For example, if I click in the upper right corner, the mouse shows up in the lower right corner. Side to side the recognition is ok, but top and bottom, it is wrong. Also the outer reaches of the screen do not seem to be sensing the touch. I attempted to do a touch calibration, but it did not sense any of my touches at that point.

I brought it with me to work for the overnight, hopefully if things die down, I can power it up and experiment some more.

I guess I will have to upgrade the RR and/or any other programs, as the system has not been used for at least 2 years. Do I just download the latest RR stuff and install it overtop, since some programs work that way, or if I should clear it off and start with a fresh install? I assume I also should upgrade the XP version that is on the computer before Windows stops supporting it in April!

Worst case, I have an old Dell laptop that may be a little better performing than the computer that came with the system I bought, and I may swap those units. Assuming the programs that were used on the system I bought I can get cheaply (if they are not already free), and basically mirror the way the original one was programmed.

Once I figure out exactly what programs and versions are on it, I hope you guys can offer a little more guidance!!

I cannot thank Mark, the original owner, enough for all his help so far!!

IMO, upgrading past XP would be a good thing assuming your hardware can handle it. If you are having multiple software issues, you could check system restore and see if there is a past restore point you could dial it back to that might help. Just check the log and see what changed between the 2 points, you will loose those changes.

You can install RR over top I believe, but given the age of the install, I would be tempted to back up your skin file(s) and re-install RR. I'm not sure if a 2 year old copy would even be installed in profile mode and I'm sure it wouldn't have dynamic menus that was added later. Mitch in the RR forum would be the guy to verify some of this stuff with, I'm not an expert on it by any stretch of the imagination...

Ok, so the latest update. I just started couple days off form work. I have spent a good portion of today fiddling with my old laptop, seeing if maybe I can set it up to take the place of the laptop that came with the system shipped to me.

I have a Dell E1705 running Win XP MCE. This was a 'custom build' back in 2006 and cost me a pretty penny. Today I formatted it, reinstalled XP, and have been adding drivers and specific programs to it to see how it will work as a host for a CarPC.

Basic specs on the computer are:

    -Dell Inspiron E1705
-Windows XP 32-bit Media Center Edition
    -Intel T2500 2GHz 997MHz Processor
    -2GB Dual Channel 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (originally came with 1GB as the max upgraded, years later I added a 2nd GB)
-nVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS 256MB

*Edit: The only thing I cannot remember, since I have not used this laptop in a while, is if the headphone jack works properly, I think I may have screwed it up years ago, so I would probably need a USB sound device. Thankfully this laptop came standard with (6) USB 2.0

Slowly trying to get things working. I have installed the 3/1/14 RR, DFX5 with most recent skin updates, on Win XP 32-bit MCE.

I have been trying to get RRGmail and PC Navigator 12 Free to load in it, but not sure if I have bitten off more than I can chew. I am mildly computer savvy, but programming/coding? Yeaaaaaa, not as much as I wish!!

Have been scouring the forums for all sorts of answers to my questions, but I just seem to raise more and more questions the deeper I look!

Ok I guess I need to read up more before posting. I guess DFX 5.1.2 no longer 'supported'. Don't know if that has anything to do with the fact that some things don't seem to work well with my RR install. Back to the drawing board I suppose. Maybe just look for another skin, or go with the RR standard?

Any suggestions? Definitely sad to read the write-ups on the DFX thread, and see the people that put so much work into developing this stuff done with supporting it because technology has taken over and many cars have these nowadays.

Sorry guys, not trying to post-whore here, just seeing if anyone has input along the way. I waited a long time to do this and there is no turning back!!!!
