    A new Beginning...

    Hi Guys,

Its really been a while since i have been on the forums, I mean i have popped in form time to time to lurk a bit and suss what was happening in the Carpc world, but thats about it, so please forgive my somewhat Noob awkwardness when it comes to this new thread and the questions i might pose as my build log progresses.

Anyway as the title of this thread suggests this is a totally new project i am about to embark on and in case you were wondering yes i do have a 1st project and can be found here

Seeing as this thread represents something new in my life i.e.: New country, New Job, New home, New life, New car, I decided it was time to get into a new project as well, so I will be putting together a fully kitted install in my car this year it will consist of the following stages and parts...:

    The Car:

    Black 2000 Lexus IS200

    The Carpc:

    Asus P8H61-I R2.0 Mobo
    240Gb OCZ Agility3 SSD
    2x 2GB 1600MHz DDR3 DIMM's
An Intel G550 2.6Ghz Dual core Celeron CPU w/ Fan and Heat sink
    Wireless mini keyboard and touchpad
7" touchscreen monitor courtesy of my dad, I am told it has HDMI connectivity as well, not sure of brand though
Will attempt to build it all into a Double din unit using an old broken D/Din radio housing and fibreglassing

    *Note -Still require:
Inteligent PSU - not sure which one to get yet probably require around 200W
    USB GPS antenna
DAB module + Antenna for digital radio
Bluetooth dongle for Handsfree phone function
    Mic for phone function

    The Audio:

    Kenwood KDC 4054U
OEM components in the front doors
OEM speakers in the rear shelf
    VIBE Space Dual 2 ohm D2 DVC 12" 30cm 1000 WRMS Sub
Vibe SPACE Bass 1v2 - 1200W RMS Mono Amplifier
SSL 2 Farad CAP200B Power Capacitor
    Connects2 PRO Series 0 AWG

    *Note - Still require:
    6.5" Vibe components
2ch Vibe amp (to run the components)
    Connects2 8AWG kit
    Distro block
    Custom built Stealth 2ft3 enclosure
I also have the problem of my Head unit only having the one pre amp output - will need to split the sign or work something out with a signal processor

The help i need is a) what intelligent PSU do i need for my mobo,
    b) if necessary is it possible to run 2 PSU's together, 1 running the mobo and usb devices and 1 running the touch screen and peripherals or whatever extras i have at that time and c) any suggestions on how to play the audio through all speakers with as much quality as possible with only one preamp and 1 mono amp.

Anyway here are some pics of the sub, amp, wiring kit and cap...

I will upload pics of the pc hardware soon aswell...

Hey welcome back to the flock! First thing I would change is the processor maybe at least to an i3 (personally I would go i7) for power supply I would recommend the dsatx unit 220w http://store.mp3car.com/collections/...e-power-supply and is supported in CF,RR and Driveline. GPS I would also recommend the sure development board eBay item number:230844194302 over the globalsat bu-353-s4. Audio I have no clue or recommendations, maybe rray could chime in. Good luck and keep us posted SNO

Sno, why an i7? Don't get me wrong, I'm all about more power, but from an actual application standpoint, what does the extra horsepower (and energy usage and HEAT) buy you? I've got my own anecdotes regarding how much power you need, but I'd be curious what others have experienced. Now just to clarify, If we're talking the newer Haswell or Broadwell ULV chips, then sure, why not. But if it's more of a standard desktop SKU with a TDP in the 60-90 range, then let's hear it.

My only thought was the wallet, why buy Celeron or i3 when for a few dollars more you can have a full bore cpu. I doubt it would ever max out in a carpc environment so the wattage and heat would really not be an issue, although running a Celeron or i3 would be much less draw and heat. And my first recommendation was for an i3. My carpc is still a mobile q9100 more than enough power for my needs. SNO

Agreed. The value proposition these days really does favor the more powerful CPUs. When I first looked at putting a Sandy Bridge i5 in the car, I did some very careful full load calculations on what kind of draw the system was likely to create. Never really got close to the capacity of the M2 on the 12v bus, although you can stack a lot of USB devices and it is possible to overload the 5v bus if you're not careful. Obviously, powered hubs can help solve that. I think the great thing about the market right now is that you have a really broad selection of hardware that will work well in the car. The rise of the NUC form factor really adds a lot of options for mounting or placement.

Other than for testing and development, it's been quite a while since I had a carPC of any kind in the truck. My "daily driver" is Centrafuse on my Lenovo Miix2 8" tablet. I also have a cheap 4G LTE 7" Android tab that I'll pop in once in a while just to see how it feels. Like you say, more than enough power for my simple needs.
