    2001 Porsche 986 Windows 8.1 8" Install

So, my Eclipse had a GT 7", then a GT2 7", my Jeep Grand Cherokee had a N7 with a fiberglassed OEM looking dock to make the tablet removable. Ive played with tons of other tablets including modifying Kindle Fires and some others. I could review lots. My favorite tablet is my Dell Venue 8 Pro. I sold it like an idiot and had to buy another. Currently its one of the top 8in tablets on the market. And after a year of owning my Porsche, I am officially sick and tired of a head unit. I started cutting today. not much has to be done, just some trimming and then some fiberglass work to small side panels and relocation of some switches to locations not avail. on my specific year. But half of the cutting is done, and its fitting quite nice.

Ive been out of the loop for a while so hopefully some people can guide me in the right direction for things like GPS and legit software to use. As well as a nice lil fm program I can use to utilize my dvb-t/fm dongle from my old N7 build. the blaze software it came with is ok but kinda bulky since fm isnt its primary function.

Some pics to show what the car was like when I bought it and tearing it down.

Some more issues I'm finding is some sort of program to handle power settings better than Windows. Like pause/play on battery/charger. Airplane mode. Ect. Been searching Google and no luck yet.

Not sure how many people are interested in this but after all the systems I've built this one is turning out to be the best. I've done car PCs. Laptops. Android tablets. Had a car ROM setup nexus 7 in my jeep that people believed was OEM. This windows tablet is turning to be awesome. Ran the small program made for windows xp in c++ by some student and it shuts down when car is shut off. Bios turns tablet on once power is sensed. Ordered a Creative 5.1 sound device for its reviews. And a 7 port powered hub. Also picked up a cheap 4 port charging hub and hacked it up to run high power hungry devices like my S5 and the tablet. Stupidly whoever created it linked the USB ports together but damn thing has no USB chip or any host abilities. It caused issues while charging. They also didn't set it up right. One port I soldered in a 1.5kohm resistor for the tablet. And the rest I bridged d+ And d- so large devices will charge with ease. However that's going to be a problem when I link the data from the hub. But more research will help figure it out.

Need to figure out FM and some sort of program to run to sync my phone via Bluetooth.

Nice work and great to see it coming together. I've also been impressed with a similar tablet from HP that I'm mucking around with.

Only thing missing is a good simple Vehicle Interface (FE) to tie it all together. After years of building, driving and testing, I'm now totally sold on hardware controls to drive the interface when you can't (shouldn't) be reaching for the touch screen. Trying to make it feel truly integrated with the vehicle is the hardest part, and rewarding when it finally works. BTW Vehicle looks nice, like the interior colour.

What's the name of the program that you're using to shutdown when power is removed? Also can't wait to see how you sort out the OTG and charge, that was the main reason that I decided against using the DVP 8

My car has no steering wheel controls or anything like that but there are a few products that can do it if you do. i ordered a fusion usb volume device and it will go either below the tablet in the pocket which ill fiberglass its own area keeping some of the pocket, or on the sides. i wasnt all for losing the switches but with a adruino or fusion brain i can have the windows os operate my roof or door locks. as for bluetooth, im working on trying to get a fix for the bluetooth cripple that was implimented in windows 8.1. upsets me i cannot connect to my phone anymore except via sidesync usb or wifi. it would be nice if there was a tethering app that allows the phone to remain on the network its outputing so the tablet sees the mobile phone with side sync. a few more things and shell be done. im still trying to locate oem looking leather to re wrap the sides so it looks right, if i cannot find any by the time everything is done i will just carbon the sides, i have some left over resin, just need some small sample templets for cheap and get it done.

care to share what you got going on> ive been using android until now which is a lot easier since there is soo much support for it for the car scene right now, especially the nexus 7.

so trying to get back into windows. just got the auto hybernate program working i found in another area of this forum... works great .

Hi, my sig has my current build, a Surface Pro2. I had a feeling you didn't have steering controls, I was thinking more along the lines of a control panel between the seats, no need to reach or take your eyes off the road (buttons don't shift position) I'm also a firm believer in having a physical volume control, independent of the Tablet or FE (with levels control still accessible by the FE for a number of reasons).

I wrote my own FE so Auto Hibernate (or any mode) is built in. Just over 6 seconds from Ignition on to Music playing and GPS mapping and GPS speed display all locked and running. FE also has auto volume levelling with speed (GPS), DAB/FM, inbuilt Mobile Phone (module) fully integrated into the FE, and full climate control interface / display via the FE, all controlled by either touch screen, Steering buttons or my version of an iDrive between the front seats.

There are some nice FE's around but I just wish someone had decided years ago to standardise a simple USB coms interface consisting of a dozen or so "key codes" that could be configured in the relevant FE setup to control the main modules of the FE, for users with no programming skills it would have made the FE a lot easier to integrate into the Vehicle.

Post #37 here http://www.mp3car.com/laptops-netboo...pro-2-a-4.html is about where I started the build - circuits along with trials and failures included. Still working perfectly - just need to get around to finishing the outer facia.

Are you charging and running USB (data) devices over the same port? was not sure if the tablet you used had a separate charge port?

Dell messed up with the Micro USB. They made it so you cant charge and use data at the same time. Thats mostly hacked but i soldered in my own Full Size USB port as well as an internal 128gb flash drive set up as a normal HD.

I dont really care for a front end. Windows 8 is already pretty nice. just run programs and apps. i do need to figure out bluetooth connectivity to my phone tho. thats bugging me. When i buy a gps dongle will be the time to figure out A nav program. i do want to control door locks, roof and ... i forgot what the other switch was. but the 3 switches i had to give up to put this size tablet where i did...
