Super clean install, both the screen and the drive.
When I saw the first pic, I thought, "I can't see the install. The steering wheel is in the way." I quickly realized that the steering wheel of an M3 is never, ever in the way.
I used VGA and USB extension cables. I don't really understand why there are so many people wanting to extend the proprietary DIN connector. All it would do is guarantee you the inability to use any other screen. My Lilliput monitor is failing and since it's built into the dash -- probalby no warranty on it either, even though it's not my fault that the pos panel in it is going outAnyway, I'm probably going back to the original GAIN screen now anyway...

Hi Gork.. Got myself a 'Newish' car.. 2002 M3 Cab. Just wondering if you ever sorted out the ibus controls on your steering wheel ? I have looked at the first couple of pages, and the last few but cant be arsed to be honest going throught the rest.. sorry :-( you did offer I noticed that you could supply some already printed pcb boards.. is this still the case 7 months on ?
cheers

Hi there,
First I must say I'm impressed with the result you have achieved after working on your projects. I would like to do something simillar but using a portable PC instead of a ITX or Mini PC. I will use a Lilliput as TFT screen.
Do you think I can have trouble using a laptop instead of a Mini PC? It's a Fujitsu/Siemens P-III. I'm worried about connecting the computer to a sound amp because the PC doesn't have a line out output for sound, only the headphones output.
Any recommendations/help on this?
Keep up the great job
CdRsKuLL: No; I am not making them, but there are a couple people selling I-Bus interfaces on the HackTheIbus yahoo group that are better than the one I would have made anyway.. Sorry.
I am going to be releasing the steering wheel button software I am developing, but the timeframe to this is unknown. It could be two weeks; it could be two months. I try to stay pretty busyThe version I actually use in my car is not configurable and crashes if you don't push a button every 7 minutes or so
Rooke: Many people have used laptops in their installs with various degrees of success. The main problem with a laptop is controlling startup/shutdown and operating it with the lid closed. The advantage with a laptop is that you don't typically have to worry about the hardware supporting suspend/hibernate, and you have a lot easier time of dealing with the power supply. I'm sure someone else who actually used a laptop can help you better than I can.

thanks gork for the reply.. I've emailed someone in denmark who seems to do one, awaiting there email now.. also planning my m3 install.. you have given me afew ideas from your posts. thanks for that. I might attempt a lcd + slot dvd rom in the double din space.. still planning this bit. I have the amp installed now and its wired to all the speakers.. prob going for the old opus + mini atx p4 board.. with 120 gig and maybe a nec 2510 dvd-+rw in the boot. Also fitted a sub in the ski hole.. for that extra punch. Still thinking where to stick the gps unit as its a cab the only place might be the front windscreen.. is there a prob in this position by any chance.. I know the front screen in my laguna was a defo no no. also fingers crossed on my dlink radio.. I will investigate the ibus further.. Ive downloaded some programs so will have a play once things have moved along a bit. I'm also going to be doing a M3 media car skin.. (frodoplayer also) will let u have a copy when its done.. will be a few weeks yet, as first things first.. get the pc in the car.
cheers

p.s I've ripped out some serious ice to make room for my pc.. so intend to make a proper job.. which does take time..
CdRsKuLL:
The GPS works through my back windshield even with tint. I have the Rand McNally Serial receiver. I would imagine that it would work through the front windshield as well.
Also, my initial plan was to put the slot DVD and screen in the double DIN but there really is not room for it. If you manage to get it to work, I'd be interested to see how![]()
