    Cool Confused, but with Carisma

Well, after 2 years and 3 iterations, I've finally got a system I'm finally happy with

Car: 1997 Mitusbishi Carisma 1.8GLS Automatic

(Click all images to view full-size - about 800k-1MB each)

    The computer
    Motherboard: VIA Epia M10000 Nemiah
    RAM: 256MB PC2100 DDR
    HDD: 3.5" 40GB 7200rpm
    Power supply: Opus 150W DC-DC
    GPS Reciever: Sapphire USB mouse
    Display: Xenarc 700TS
    CDROM: Dell slimline 24x

The computer is attached to the back of the rear seats, in a custom box (an old electrical junction box) which is an almost perfect fit for the Mini-ITX boards!

Power supply is also attached to the inside, but the desktop drive is currently just suspended on the outside, the inside is pretty chocked full!

The audio part is the two amps, the blue Jensen 4x75W powers the 12" JBL Loud + Clear sub, and two of the stock speakers, and the black SoundLab amp powers the other two stock speakers. The stock speakers are suprisingly good, and I am very happy with them (well done, Mitsubishi!)

The jumble of wires which provide everything...I might go in there with some zip ties some day and tidy it up a bit! But when the seats are up, most of it is jammed between the computer case and the amps anyway!

    Cool Part II

    [...Continued]

    The dash integration

The Xenarc 700TS is integrated into the dash, in the space originally taken up by the stock single-din stereo, and also a little cubby hole, which also occupied a single-din slot...which gives...a double-din opening.

Just perfect for the display, no?

What's that thing just underneath that display, I hear you saying? Well, that is where the cup-holder used to be. How nice of Mitsubishi to provide the perfect place for...

...a slimline CDROM drive. The CDROM is interfaced to the carputer via a...

...USB2 to IDE adapter, which plugs into a 4 port USB2 hub under the dash. The hub also provides a connection for the RoyalTek Sapphire GPS Mouse

which is hidden under the dash, up next to the clock, with an almost perfect view of the sky, which picks up 7-9 satellites, and gets a fix within a few seconds, it is highly recommended.

Windows XP and front end software is

It looks pretty snazzy at night with the visualisations...

The GPS solution is provided by Destinator, the 3d view also looks snazzy...

...as does the On-Screen Keyboard thingy

That's about all I got for now, if anyone wants to see anything else of it, please let me know, and I shall try to take some pics/explain it

    Thumbs up

Well done! I wish my set-up was that clean. I like the optical drive in the cup holder spot. So what do you do with your cups now?

I never really drink when in the car, and if I do, the bottles normally end up rolling around on the passenger seat anyway, even when I did have the cup holder!

That's what comes from driving a car without a cup holder for the first 2 years of my driving career

Took the back cover off, and there were 4 screws holding in the little cubby hole, which I used to hold the edge of the screen's front bezel, and it's pushed into the back of the piece of dash. I was going for the easiest way to return it to looking fully stock without doing any damage I have some pictures on my camera of that, but I left the cable for it at my GF's house today, so can't get the pics off til the new year.

I may be ordering an Opus soon, in which case I shall have to rethink the case, and I may be able to move the hard drive inside the case and secure it properly then

For now, i'll go wrap some masking/electrical/duct tape round it, whatever I can find

very clean install of the screen and cd rom. Keep up the good work. Is the GPS mouse fully compliant with all the major software? I think it could be a good purchase for my setup. How much was it and where from? Do you get both the usb and serial connections with it or are there 2 different models?
