7 inch T-View vga lcd in 1999 Acura RL + gps navigation

here is what i've done. level 1

7 inch lcd vga mounted in the ashtray area.
delorme usb gps receiver in the roof line by the passenger side.
regulated 12vdc for laptop and lcd display.
a slime 750mhz p3 laptop under the glove box.

so what i have now is gps navigation, videos and mp3 (sound output not yet connected to main system)

in a few months (hints level 2):
multi channels usb external sound card. stock pre-amp input to sound card. this will give me complete control over sound in the car on my lcd screen.

edit 1/10/04: originally i thought that the vga was dimmed and not up to the manufacture rated of 260nits because its dimmer than my laptop and datalux both rated at around 200 nits. i would give this vga lcd a 170-180nit rating, however, the screen was design for out door compatible(transflective?) so it work pretty well outside and in direct sun light. you can see a picture of the screen in direct sunlight action here

    after:

you can see most of everything that i did here: LCD in RL

How is the quality of the T-view and more specifically how is the brightness? Does the screen get "washed" out even a little bit in direct sunlight and how much where did you buy it?

    Thanks-

the screen gets wash out in direct sunlight. even, if its sun set. the color of the screen seems "warm" as in under 5000k instead of 7500k or 9300k. other than the brightness, and a little noise in the display (probably due to the long and non shielded vga cable), i do not have any program with it. like i have said, this screen is in the range of 170-180 nits. no way and no where in the 260 nits.

i got it from ebay, from the guy in san carlos. i dont recommend him either. it took me 3 weeks to get my screen and total 240 from original buy it now price of 209.00

i prefer to have it high, and thought about it. however, in the end, simplicity rule over. the ashtray was the perfect spot. i didnt feel like cutting up the whole dash and shift controls around to accomodate the 7", since the dash cost over 1grand at an acura dealer.

thanks for the info on the t-view... just waiting till something comes out thats cheaper and brighter than my xenarc so i can ditch it(besides the liliput)...

yeah the screen is probably best where its at until you decide to mount a permanent pc in the car and then you should lose the factory deck..no need to cut anything up.. the screen should fit there & you can (or have someone) fiberglass a bezel to match the original deck.. you can always get a bose adapter if thats an issue.... I did an install on a tl and it looked factory.... My 99 gs was broken into for the headrest tv's but the indash screen was left alone.. probably cuz it looks like factory nav..........

anyway, given whatever reason you chose to leave the factory unit, this is much better than people who have the screen mounted with a gooseneck from the top of the dash- nice work
