hey - to protect that aluminum I would suggest Rustoleum "Matte" top coat (American Accents Series). I sanded down my polished aluminum shifter plate (which was scratched to hell) so that it looked brushed aluminum and gave it three coats of the matte finish. Came out awesome and has not scratched since. Gives it a nice finished look also.

    Amazing

Dude that is absolutely amazing. I've had my car computer built since before I got my car, which is a 2003 Blue 5-spd Altima.

I have yet to put the computer in my car because I could not come up with a way to put a display in that would look good. But you certainly figured it out.
Mind telling me where you got that plate made? Maybe I'll try to con someone at my school's machine shop into making one for me.

    Great job,

I got that machined locally. I did the cad drawings, and brought them to the guy. They have a tool that cuts the shape out, then they beveled the edges by hand. I can send you the CAD file if you want to bring it to a machine shop.

That would be great! My email address is welchm@wam.umd.edu.

I can't tell if you've got the steering wheel adio controls in your car, but if you do I highly recommend the PAC SWI-X. It allows you to convert the button presses to an infrared signal. I'm using it with an Eclipse head unit, but will most likely continue to use it with a car comp with some sort of infrared receiver. You can check out the PAC SWI-X at

Also, if you want to use the trip button on the steering wheel, you only have to ground one wire that you disconnected from the radio. If you need me to, I can look up which wire that is.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I'll throw my hat in as well. A very nice job.

I do have a question.... have you had any problems with cooling??

    Once again, very nice.

It's been in the low 20's to mid 30's every day- so cooling isn't a problem yet... I'll be able to answer that in the coming months.
