    1997 Honda CR-V

Finally got around to getting some pics of my install.
I wanted a setup I can easily remove when need be, hence the not-so-professional look. hehe in the end I'm all about function anyways. Although I would like ideas on where I should eventually permanently mount the LCD.

    Hardware:
    Epia M10000 Motherboard w/ 256MB DDR
20gig harddrive I had laying around
    CDROM I had laying around
    iRock FM Transmitter
Delorme Earthmate GPS (painted black for "stealth mode"
    USB Handheld trackball mouse
    USB Foldable keyboard
Lilliput 7" screen with a cranky touchscreen I have since given up on.
LED's ripped off of my first "PC" an old Packard Bell p60 that dad bought.

    Software:
    Mediacar (most often used)
    Mediaengine
    Delorme Street Atlas 2004+
Mappoint 2004 (most often used because it embeds nicely)
    WinDVD
Some customization of the windows theme

If anyone is interested, I'll grab some pics of the inside of the shoebox sometime..

    about the lilliput

i was thinking about getting the lilliput, but would you say its really not worth it for the extra 100$ for touchscreen, cuz i will just go with the regular one then? please give me your advice. Also, how is the 7". I was thinking of going with a 10". I plan to run myhtpc, which is a great frontend software for everything multimedia, you can see it at myhtpc.net. Im worried 1024 x 768 of windows XP, would be too difficult to see/use on a 7" screen, whats your opinion.

thanks you can email me too

I don't use my touchscreen at all (i.e. the note about it being cranky). In my opininon the touchscreen isn't worth it (note "my opinion")
    -greasy fingerprints == more cleaning
-calibration and not being able to hit the corners (in my case I was having trouble closing applications with the X)
-pain in the *** to do right-clicks
-doesn't always keep the "button held down" when you drag your finger across.
-reaching for the screen while driving

I've found that the cheapo handheld mouse I got works well, I generally use it for just switching through songs on random and then I just have to mouse it over the button and I can watch the road while I click through to a song I like..

As for the size, the 7" is perfect for my car, 10" would require a lot more work, and I think it would become more obnoxious with that size. However with a larger vehicle I bet it would be great.

    valid points

you made some good valid points i did not think of. THANKYOU! i was wondering though, as far as the closing X, and cranky, did you try to use a stylus pen? and did it work well? I have a ATI remote wonder ($25) GREAT device, and uses radio freq. you might want to look into that.

im still curious, did you run XP? i know you stated 7" was perfect, but were you just regarding size. my main concern is, if im running windows XP at a resolution of 1024 x 768, am i gonna be able to read the text and images, or will i be squinting?

    thanx

I didn't try the stylus pen that came with the lilliput, knowing that unless I tied it down in the car it would get lost. That might have helped some. I've thought about getting a remote control, but all funding is on hold as a vacation is coming up.. Hehe

I am running XP on there, considering moving to gentoo if some of the linux solutions become more viable (nudge nudge to those developing I run in 800x600, and I can read things well, although I get a headache because my viewing angle is all messed up.. I can't remember if the lilliput will take 1024x768, but I would be willing to bet it would be hard to read. It was real weird for me at first, as I usually run 1600x1200 on my desktop at work and at least 1024x768 at home. But making everything big helps. I realized that the carputer was more about simplicity in the end. The easiest solution to get it's job done..

Just got my 1998 Honda CR-V.
After complete removal of my carpc setup form a honda prelude, i'm planning to put it back in my cr-v.

    I have a Toshiba 4600 Notebook with a lilliput 7" touchscreen.
As far as i can c i fits into the spot where a standard radio is put after removing the tray that's below it.

I'll post some pictures when i can find the time to start building.

    permanent location

my sis's got a 2003 CR-V and I've been dreaming of getting a carpc into it, it's just made for it! you should consider trading yours... fit the screen where the stock head unit is and get the bones into the compartment right over the air conditioning controls, take advantage of the air conditioning vents to cool it down... can you think of a better stock car to install a pc?
