    Rondo,

I'm working on an install similar to yours on a 2001 4Runner. I figure the rear compartment on your 4Runner is similar in size to mine, so I thought you might be able to tell me if you've had any heat problems with having your Opus and Computer in the rear compartment?

I was contimplating cutting a hole in that rear compartment to vent heat, but don't know if it's needed.

    Thanks!

I've noticed that Rando has not been around much lately, but he answered this question on the Toyota 4 Runner message boards:

Visit www.toyota-4runner.org and do a search for Rando's thread, titled "4runner PC"

Also, if you have not visited those forums, you should take a look, as there is some great T4R info there.

    Cleric,

Thanks for the link to http://www.toyota-4runner.org/

I found the info I needed on the heat, and a lot of other good info (carputer related and otherwise).

    Appreciate the help!

    good job

very nice install. i'm doing pretty much what you're doing. 4 gauge to distro block and then 8 gauge to psu and 8 gauge to amp. is 8 gauge too much for the pc? should i go with ten?

Time for a few (delayed responses). Sorry, I didn't catch the posts to this thread until now.

@nsmoller: No, the mic is still sitting in pieces inside the house. I'm waiting until my next major rebuild to work on it (could be soon).

@doublet: What size wire to use depends on your setup but it's not going to hurt anything to go bigger than you need.

@tdbu24: I don't have the skin and haven't used Mediacar for years. It's long long gone. Sorry.

Two years have passed and it's time to upgrade. I'm planning to install A-Open's new mini-ITX i945GTT-VFA board paired with a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo (T2400) and 2 x 512MB PC5300 SODIMMS. I'll be switching over to the Carnetix P1900 to supply the 19V required by the new motherboard. The 2nd output on the Carnetix will power my screen and the optional 5V add-on will be used for the audigy (assuming I still need the audigy).

I'd like to squeeze this into the same spot in my truck. Since space is limited there, I'm not sure yet what I'll do for a case. eMachineshop and Protocase are awfully pricey options.

I'll post pics as the upgrade progresses over the upcoming weeks and months. Hopefully the extra processing and video power will provide for a snappier response when running RR and IG with voice recognition.

I sat on this for a good long while but I finally got the new system installed. Everything looks pretty much the same as before except I'm now using a custom case made by VeritasForge. I was able to power my LCD, Audigy NX, and everything else from the 5V/12V regulators built into the i945GTt-VFA motherboard.

In addition to a much more responsive setup, my screen flicker problem is now resolved. I was playing with the old setup on the bench the other day and noticed the flicker (previously this only happend when in the truck). I remembered reading that many early m10k boards were built with capacitors that leak. Sure enough, there were several bloated/leaky caps on my board, including one right next to the video connector! I suspect these were also the source of occasional system lock-ups that I never could resolve. Fortunately, the board still had a couple weeks left on its 3yr warranty so I RMA'd it and will get a replacement for only $16. w00t!

Well Rando, I've been impressed with your truck over the past few years. I too own a 4Runner, its a 98 at the moment. Soon to be upgraded to the 03'. I've been looking for just the right one! I've been a member of this site now for about a year and 1/2, but am just getting to building my system. Its been a long road of reading, reading, and more reading. But I think it should turn out well.

I'm pretty much going with the same set up you once had, the M10k, with the M1-ATX, Lilput screen, and adding XM as well. Not a fan of the FM like you were. I think I'm going to try the same mounting location as you used, seemed like a good place.

But now you have changed your set up. It threw me for a loop. Besides your screen flickers, did you have any other problems, or just want something different and new? Your making me worry that I need to do something different. Am I having last minute worries for no reason, do you think I'll be happy with my choices, or do I need to re-think what I am getting into?

Pics of the new set up and your likes and dislikes would be great appreciated. Thanks in advance. And thanks for all the info over the past few years, its been awesome!!!
