I did, but the performance gains of the i3/5 alternatives are fairly compelling. Looking at various benchmarks, it seems like the e350 is roughly equivalent to the Atom D525 or about 5+ times slower than the cpus I'm considering. Having said that, the e350 should be more than enough to handle typical carpc tasks -- coming from a guy that ran an M10k for years.

Fair enough, yeah I haven't fully compared it but from some of the benchmarks I have seen on some fields the e350 can almost keep up with an i3/i5 (I managed to play portal 2 on it last night ) I don't know how fast that atom is but it certainly seems a few steps up from most atom based pcs I have used.
The big difference for me is the power draw between the i series and the AMD which is much closer to the atom which will be good in my car. But if you are going to undervolt the differences might start being negligible.

Good to be spolit for choice

Here is what I settled on.

Intel DH61AG - This is seemingly a very nice mini-ITX little board.
Intel Core i3-2120T - The price of this compared to the i5 options makes it win out. This is about 5 times the processing power of my prior setup based on the T2400, so I don't think I'm going to have any performance problems.
Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1333MHz DDR3 SODIMM - Overkill but it seems 4GB kits cost about the same as 8GB kits right now.
