The PC is in the trunk. I had pictures of the PC but removed them. I should have new updated PC pics tomorrow.Originally Posted by M11VNY
The DVD drive is in the front, in the dash, under the LCD. It's connected to a IDE -> USB2 converter. There's a USB cable running from the front to the PC in the trunk.
*UPDATED PICS* 05/21/05 - New pictures of the dash.
The IDE -> USB2 converters I've seen around all have a power cord with them that seems to plug in. How did you set that up or did you find a converter without the power cord?
I've looked around and haven't seen one.
I have some power wires from the Opus power supply run to the front. I just tap into the 5v.Originally Posted by DubbedOver

I'm still working on how to wire my own Jetta from the trunk PC to the front. It sounds like most people are just running one USB cable to the front and then using a hub to feed the various things they need (touch screen, DVD drive, ashtray usb connector for key drives, etc.). Is this the right way to do it or does one need to run separate USB cables...it seems to me like it shouldn't matter where you're daisy chaining the signal whether its at the PC or closer to the peripherals right?
My other question is powering it all. Does the hub really need to be powered? Is this only for things that are drawing large amounts of power through the USB or is it just because you're trying to run the signal of 4 peripherals down one 15 foot cable. If so, is it a matter of just cutting the coax adaptor end off the ac adaptor that comes with it and splicing/soltering that to a 5V lead brought up from the PSU? Similar question for the IDE/USB2 converter and the LCD screen (which needs 12V instead of 5V right?).
Thanks for the help!

There is usually not enough voltage in that one USB line run from the PC to power more than one device. On top of that there's also potentially already a voltage drop from the 15ft+ run which could cause problems. You also are spot on about how to power the hub. That's exactly how I did it. You can do the same for the LCD power (using the correct voltage for your LCD - usually 12).
very nice!
think a car PC will be my final "mod" to my car, before I sell it in a couple of years.. http://zomb.alphite.ca/golf/whee/1.jpg
I meant to do it before all of this, but I got carried away.
drop, suspension in a week or so
Where can I find some next, previous, eject ... buttons similar to that? How is it rigged to control the dvd drive? Forgive me if it seems like a lame question, I've looked everywhere and haven't found an answer. - Oh, and props on your setup.
