Turbo, as all have said, outstanding work and planning. I too have been considering going the laptop route. I'm just so married to having a dc-dc power supply and a miniitx, though the miniitx's power is WAY low, I'm afraid that as carpc sofware grows in complexity and power, that a normal mini-itx just won't cut it, however as you stated, desktop computers are too hot and temperamental in an automotive environment. I have a powerbook that i'd like to use, but it's osx, and i really would prefer to use Centrafuse from here on out.

Turbo, you have a sweeeeeet ride! I too am going to do my next car with a laptop based setup. The difference for me being I will stick with the touch screens and use them for input and display. Not that I am knocking your installation. Noooooo, it is the sickest, sweetest ride I have seen yet. I can get cheap laptops with their only problem being broken LCD's and you can guess the rest.... Easy money. Also docking stations are fairly cheap if you source them hard enough so I can do a truly portable solution and hook all the carpc gear up to the docking station and the laptop hooks up for travel or comes in when not in use. Once again my hat is off to you sir.

    Nicely done!

hey, I was leaning twards a docked solution myself..... figured it be cool to have a fully embeded pc that was also removable & transportable, only problem for me is that I use a laptop all the time, & I have a laptop for daily use... if I go anywhere that I may need it it's with me, so I decided embeaded was a better way for me to go with my vehicle.

docked is awsome if you don't need to use the laptop often but will need to use it sometimes.... also great for out of the car maintanance, programming upgrades, etc... but I didn't ever want to have a time that my computer wasn't there...

I just noticed that I posted nothing here about the devolpment of the screen, so here goes:

in brief..... the backlight turned into a project & a half......CCFL'S turned into a real hassle trying to get a multi tube inverter for my spec.s, also heat would have become a major factor with a lot of bulbs behind the screen, involving vents & fans..... I looked at all the alternatives & decided to go with ultra bright L.E.D's which is fast becoming a major player in backlight technology....

I'm going with 32 of the 1 watt luxeon's & three dimming power supplys. The main problem with this design is that these 1w luxeons also generate a lot of heat, but instead of heating the ambient air around them as bulbs would, these things don't project any heat, rather they heat up on the backsides.... A LOT.... they are designed to be mounted on a heat sink....... to make a long story short I decided to go with liquid cooling.... this will extract the excess heat from my screen & disipate it OUTSIDE the cabin, through a radiator....

this is what each one looks like....

and wired for testing..... this is only with 20 of the luxeon 1's, but further testing showed that I had uneven light distrobution & I added 12 more to "fill the gaps"....
