sweet! yeah - I had looked at the MP3 one from SB a while back, completely forgot about it

    thanks for the link!!

edit: quick question though - i noticed that it's only 16bit, being that we will be using the optic out, will that matter?

or is optic the same across the board? is it just the coax that the sampling rate applies to?? (I'm still trying to get this all sorted out in my head....lol)

I recommend the audigy 2nx usb card instead of the MP3 card. You can easily power the audigy from the 5V rail from the atx supply as mentioned in a previous post. The MP3 gets power from the USB cable which has more chances of picking up noise. Also, the optical input on the MP3 card can only be used for recording...it will not play the audio in real time. I've tried both cards, the audio is noticeably better with the audigy 2nx.

How about using this Edirol Card. Edirol makes high end studio-quality devices and I bet u can get this one for a decent price. Nice to see another GTI around here.

the deal is though that I can't find an optic sound card that is of decent quality that will fit....any ideas?

My problem with some of the Sound Blaster external cards is that I don't need all of the extra crap that they come with, and that with the optical ports being on the front, and all the knobs, etc. If i could find another sound card with an optic out, that's not as tall, I would be all over it.

Post em if you know of em!

Well if you don't spend the money on good audio cards, you might as well be ****in up a tree when it comes to comp. I used a pci riser card and put the card over the motherboard check here-http: I also use an audigy 2-zs and if your gonna do video you have to have it, this thing will pull dts like no other, the signal to noise ratio is 108 db with 24bit/96hz even in 7.1 surround if you want true car audio sound similar to an eclipse head unit... buy the audigy and be happy . After all your gonna spend between 400 to 600 on your mids and tweets i'm guessing. Take it for what it's worth.
    Epia M1000 1.2gig, Toshiba 40gb HD, Itronix 60gb HD, 512ram,PCR, Audigy2zs, 2 Xenarc 7" , FRODOPLAYER Trying RR frontend , 2@1600/w Harrison labs amps & Caps, Focal & MB-Quart midrange, Diamond Audio D6 Subs, Mb Quart Tweets, 2-Audiocontrol three.1 !

heh - what's funny about your first comment is that before, when all I used was the onboard audio the judges were quite impressed....but:

    I ended up getting this:

    with this adapter:

since my board (MII12000) has a PCMCIA slot! should work! came out to be right at $100 with rebate and recently discounted price at Circuit City.

AFAIK, that's a pretty bad way to mount a hard drive. Vertical is fine, horizonal is fine (though I wouldn't recomend it for a carputer setup), but at an angle? I've heard that can be bad...

Talked to the guys at work and they all seemed to think that it would be ok. Mounting a HD in a car isn't ideal no matter how you look at it....I have to work with what space I have. Unlike a lot of people on here, I'm not just shoving a shuttle or a premade case off in my car as I don't have the room or the desire to do that.

What kind of volume are you estimating that box to be? You have put some really nice craftmanship into building it, it looks WAY to big for 2 average 12's.. but then again the 12w6v2s might call for more volume than most.

Either way, looks really good, and hope it all turns out clean!

they require around 1.25 each for a sealed enclosure. That box is about 2.25, so it's actually a little on the small side.

12w6v2s are not your average subs. They require a lot of power, hell they weigh something like 25lbs each.

The harddrive mounting will be fine.

As long as the angle is not towards an horizontal mounting... (don't know how to put it well).
