I didn't do any cutting. The fortunate thing about this car in particular is the fact that they have a navigation option in Japan that comes with a pre-fabricated 'navigation pod.' I simply bought that pod and installed it.

The gallery is quite extensive; i hope it helps you out at least a little.
I know there are at least a few cars that have this sort of factory option, there might be a chance that you could use one for your dash. What kinda car do you have?
*EDIT* nevermind, just saw your profile... I coulda sworn i've seen a factory setup for a 98 civic somewhere around here...
