Number 3 Acura RL PC install

I did the whole thing again this time. I moved the AC to the bottom and moved the screen to the top and recessed it a little bit. I was getting way too much glare. I used balsa wood and bondo to make the piece, and then painted it with a bumper coating for a reason I can't explain. I also added a laptop mouse and microphone that folds out in the sunvisor. The mic works real well that way. I was able to get the keyboard in the ashtray by taking the back off and grinding it down a little. The door shuts just fine. Its nice for navigation. The button for the screen is a button from another acura rl that was a blank spot in my car. I found a complete acura RL at the junk yard where I was able to find the AC controls at the bottom, and tons of buttons that match to use. I also added a back up camera, but have to use the remote to see it since I don't have an input for the computer. Really I couldn't find a USB TV tuner that would work with the plugins available.

Ill post some daytime pics to show against the old daytime pics.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I am probably going to end up redoing it again. I like the way the screen is setup, but I want to redo it so it looks more plastic and blends up front, and add some buttons that look natural.

Do you have any more pics or more description of how the mic is secured in the visor?

I don't have any pics of it secured in there. Its the mic you buy at either walmart or Best Buy that has a blue mute button on the on the back. It came attached to a large bottom and came with a smaller piece that would let you attach it to the monitor. Both of them let it swivel. All I did was cut the smaller piece down to around an inch and a half diameter. The material around the sunvisor slips off, its like a cover, and the visor is made of foam. So I just cut the foam down with the dremel the size of the swivel piece I cut down, and glued the crap out of it. I think I used super glue and hot glue. I then started sewing it back together where I had to cut it with a razor blade to get the visor material off, but ended up super gluing that back together because it worked better. I think I paid 14.95 for it, and picked it because it swiveled and becasue it had a mute switch which is helpful with Navivoice starts to hear things in the music. I take that back, its about one inch in diameter. I cut that down to as small as possible and ran the wire all the way to the back. It works really well and I used a long extension. The last one I had didn't work as well as this one does.

If anyone has some extra Xenarc's laying around, let me know, I take them in any condition, specifically without the housing for foldouts and molding.

RE: your PM - your mailbox is full... Kenny,

I'm going from memory. There was so much dust created in the work process that I didn't DARE touch a camera. Now I regret it. As I recall there are lines at the top and bottom of the Lilliput front cover that I made my cuts on. That left me with a frame to cover the front of the Lilli and mount the Lilli to. The acrylic 3/8" was cut out large enough for the Lilli to clear and I used a plumbers epxoy to fix it to the acrylic. That was almost a year ago and it still looks like new.
My first attempt at a carputer.

PM me if you're interested in a monitor faceplate for your '99-'04 Golf or Jetta. My Vortex ID is NorthAtlR32 - you can IM me there, too. Go here for more information.

Thanks. I used a housing I had leftover from another screen to put my new Xenarc in. Actually fit pretty well, and I didn't have to redo much. It turned out to be the size of the screen itself. I started looking into the acrylic, and could only find a sheet for $80 which was huge. I found some 1/4" at Home Depot, but it was clear and thicker then I needed to be. Ive heard that epoxy is hard as hell, especially that double stuff you get at the auto parts store.
    later,
    K

Edit: I finally found abs down the street real cheap, but not sure if I am going to spend the time on redoing it. Its nice the way it is, and the little glare I get doesn't affect the big X arc.

Oh yea, thanks for the heads up on the buttons. I had been looking for something for awhile and couldn't find anythign worth while. Bulkin makes a whole line of buttons that look nice, especially since I lost alot of functions removing buttons to make room.

Cut me some slack , I didn't know what the hell I was doing and was paranoid about the shaking of the harddrive. My freaking harddrive gets so hot its sick, but she runs like a champ.

Well I am about to post the updates to the Acura. Not alot has changed, but enough to say its another revolution. Its the same setup physically up front, but the PC and what it does, and alot of hardware is different.
