Well the monitor case was hacked up. The buttons were removed and the bottom of the case was sawed off to become shorter. I then filled the bottom with bondo and painted the whole assembly black. This mode permitted the screen to fit into the top map pocket while it was hinged to the lid. The input select button and the IR sensor were moved to the left side and installed under the side modification that I did to the map pocket.
The road is long but we are getting there.

Cool stuff.. I like how you have the option to keep things either blue or red inside your car!

    Steering wheel control

Are there plans to use steering wheel control with carputer?
Maybe joysctick or LPT adapter possible to do, but imho it requires some electical work. Thats known that mazda's steeringwheel is very hard to intrude due to the aribag, so the idea is to use two wires going to original headunit. Hope this link describes the signal-coding from mazda.

Now creation of such adapter is in progress, or somebody already have it?

it's a simple momentary switch bought from radio shack. instead of wiring it up directly to the laptop, i wired it into the docking station instead. it was much easier and keeps the laptop itself clean. all i had to do was open up the docking station and use a multimeter to figure out which points the switch shorted in order to turn it on. once that was done, it was just a matter of soldering the wires to the two points and running it to the switch up front. it works just like the normal power button too. push it and it turns on. push it again and it goes into hibernate mode. hold the button down and it completely shuts it down.

in order to remove the docking station, if need be, i also put this connector in line between the switch and the docking station. it's just a 1/8" audio connector. just unhook it and the docking station can be taken out of the car.

OK I got everything u said thnx for the reply so fast, now wat i wanna know if all docking station have a power button? here my docking station ... I have a dell latitude D600... tell me if this docking station has the power utton and if i should buy it so everything can come out right? here is the link:

thanks man. i actually just made a few changes recently. i upgraded the hard drive, replaced the monitor with the newer lilliput version (still in the same spot, though), switched from street atlas to streets & trips to iGuidance, replaced the ati remote wonder and infrared keyboard with a RF mini keyboard/joystick mouse combo, and i'm running mobile impact now instead of the outdated mediacar. the addition of iGuidance alone makes the whole carputer a worthwhile experience for me. plus, it integrates so seamlessly into mobile impact. i'm loving it right now. i'll try to get some updated pics up over the weekend.

hey canibusfan and welcome!!! if you do a search, there are a few 6's on this board with setups that are much better than mine. the biggest challenge at first was finding a way to feed audio through the car's system. but with the development of auxmod, MAZ-PC/ALP, and the metra kit, this is no longer a problem and more & more mazda 6 carputers are starting to appear.

as far as how much i spent.... well, let's just say more than i wanted to. there have been several iterations of my carputer (currently v4.0), numerous screwups that required me to buy more than one of the same part, and plus the fact that i replaced the entire stereo system. all in all, i'd say i've spent about $3000 so far. man, that's depressing....

and i'd definitely be willing to help you out if you ever need it. va beach is just down the road from here. PM or IM me some time.

Do you have two subs in the boot? I can see the big one but hten there's another speaker on the rear deck in the middle. IS that to play some low-mid frequencies? How big is it and do you find it improves the lower end a lot?

actually, that small one in the rear deck is the sub for the stock bose system. it's been disonnected ever since i installed the new system. i'd like to take it out, but it's a total PITA to do. however, there is a 12v wire that leads into it, which i tapped into to power my laptop.

I'm curious - can you go into more detail about how iG is integrated seamlessly? Does it pause/lower volume on music when iG voice instructions are made? What is the tight integration?
