Hey Sama, thanks for the pics of the screen, it looks almost a perfect fit!! good find.

Those 2 din adapters are gonna give a lovely finish by the look of it and will recess the screen slightly into the car which will be great for reducing sunlight glare!

Once the screen is in I doubt I will keep the wood trim, it is the same colour as the one you have, VAVONA, but there is a slight crack in the laquer. Not bad but still noticable... let me know if you still want it but I may still have plans for it yet ;-)

I want to keep the BMW computer aswell, now I was going to move into the gloebox but I have found a DIN sized motorised VGA touchscreen that I may be able to get in the gap and still keep the BMW computer. I know the Gap where the old BMW tape player is smaller than Din size but looking at the pics of the screen it only comes from the top half of the unit so I could mount the lower half behind the BMW computer. I would then attach the wood trim to the front/top of the screen as so when it is reclined the dash looks completely standard ... This prob does not make much sense, mind off on a tangent...need more beer!!

By the way Sama, e39dream, there is a great car forum dedicated to the 5 series Beemer, we would love you to come along and join. Im Darkspirit on the forum... http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/ see you there!

I know precisely what you mean as that's what I had in mind too

I chose to move away from that however as the screens in motorized enclosures are 7" max (that I've seen). Secondly, I didnt' want to add another point of failure into the mix. From what I've been reading, motorized screens tend to bugger up a bit, and thirdly I was worried about sunglare, with the screen being so "open".

Don't get me wrong, this may well be the type of setup you prefer, but I had to speak my mind and share!

I think that if you remove the tape player, you loose the radio and amplifier. Unless you're lucky enough to have a separate Alpine amp where the CD changer is. I can't see where the amp is in my car. It's definitely not in the boot, and I'm not sure it would be anywhere else.

How are you planning to connect up your Carputer?

I've got one of those soundlinx adaptors that plugs into the ibus and CD conncetor, and it gives 2 RCA inputers instead of the CD changer. I'll be pluging the computer there, and also hooking into the ibus that way.

I've joined the bmw5 forum as sama.

I am using this adapter, it wires in behind the dash, or in the trunk (installers choice) there are also homebrew adapter schematics around- I love my car and decided to buy the adapter, to get the pc audio to come thru you just select cd changer heres the link http://indashpc.org/new/adapters/usbbmw.html

    Sama,

After a little thought and looking at your progress pics and what you have heard about the screens failing im going to go for the fixed screen option (cheaper aswell) You need to have the tape player attached and the BMW computer to use the radio, you could mount these hidden elsewhere in the car if you really want to keep them. Oh and welcome to the other forum

    Sama & Cris,

I am going for a whole new system in the car, not using any of the BMW audio equiptment. I used to compete in soundoffs and have most of the gear I need. The PC will connect directly to 3 Rockford Fosgate amps fed to front, rear and subs. I also have a fourth MTX amp that will feed the front centre chanel for the 5.1 surround. Everything will be controlled directly via the touchscreen although if I could use the volume control on the steering wheel that would be most useful and cool!

    e39dream,

Seen you on the other forum already mate deffo a forum hound now

wohow! nice audio plan dude. I'm sticking to the stock sound system for the time being, I may later put a thumper in, but no more than that, not in this car anyway. Hopefully when I upgrade to an M5

Anyhoos, regarding the bezel, I think that's a good plan. I only found out about this better template bezel recently, which is a bit late for me since I've started fabrifudging! Good thing about this bezel is that it covers the entire area (post 21 says so) rather than stil require the flip thing. If my current bezel attempt fails, then I'll be getting one of those to try.

As for the steering wheel functions, u just need an ibus adaptor, probably useful to have anyway in ur carputer as it gives u access to all sorts of things. like waking the computer up when u click the remote, rather than ignition (info from hacktheibus yahoo group). Check eedesignkits. When I get some time, I'd like to write an app to mimic the BC computer (average/trip mpg etc)

Also, keep an eye on this skin. 100% OEM look (when it's complete that is).

Good find with that Bezel , I think i'll be ordering one of those, make life a lot easier!!

That skin looks pretty cool, I would love a BMW look skin, perfect finishing touch!

Think I will have to go the iBus route, looks to good to ignore!

    Thanks,
    Mark
