Since I spent $35k on the car, I decided that I didn't want to worry too much about cost, so I went relatively high-end with all the components, from the audio system to the computer. Certainly, I could have spent more, there are much, much higher end things out there, but I think I made the right choices for me.
Then, when I did the work, I took my time, and made sure it was right, a luxury many professional installers can't afford. By that, I mean that the average professional installer will do a good job, and certainly earn his money, but it's not his car, and he won't take the extra time to do it exactly right. I tried to take the time to do it exactly right, for example, soldering all connections instead of crimping.
All in all, I like it. Of course, somewhere down the line, I'll rip most of it out, and change the configuration...

Your install is one of the nicest install. Nice job.
Thanks, I appreciate the compliments.
Hello, Dave. I have done a ton of research. I've invested about $600 dollars and my funds for this are now running thin. I have purchased a VW Phatbox, had the Infiniti SAT wiring harness installed, a cable made to replicate pinouts for communication and changed the firmware within the DMS cartridge. It looks as though the firmware on the Phatbox updated successfully as the directions instructed when the car was turned on. Unfortunately, I am receiving a "No Sat" reading on the radio.
The question that I have is that I've seen that the cable that Phatnoise used to provide seems to have a black box connected to the wire that had some electronics in it, is that correct? If so, do you know how I may modify my current setup so that this may work.
This is just some of the information that I've read, that may be important.
"Standard line audio needs to be converted to 'differential' line audio and there needs to be a serial link w. the head-unit communcating using proprietary command sets."
"When using the normal PhatBox firmware (CD Changer Emulation), text is not displayed. PhatNoise does have some Satellite Emulation firmware that they were working on which can display text, but it has way too many bugs and problems. They may never get that firmware working properly."
Thanks for any assistance that you may be able to provide.
Sorry, I just saw your question; my email notification seems to have failed. What year G35 do you have, what model, and what options?
Also, do you happen to have anything else installed to your radio, like a seperate input in (PAC-AAI-NIS2) If so, this will mess things up.
Finally, the phatbox cartidge and box itself are the same for all cars, it is the cable that makes the difference. From everything I have read, you need the correct cable (Infiniti/Nissan) or else it won't work at all (no workarounds that I know of)
Dave
No problem at all, Dave. I have an '03 Coupe with Navigation. I don't have anything else installed right now, not even satellite.
Yeah, I have a cable built by an electrician based on the Infiniti electronics sheet that Infiniti printed out for me, so I'm hoping it will work. I contacted Phatnoise and I'm going to be sending it back so they can repair(not sure it's faulty) my DMS cartridge. Support informed me that if the "sys" partition is not exactly 258mb that it may have been partitioned from original shipment. I think what happens is that the security encryption that they place in the DMS is removed or something. After I get it back, we will see. Thanks though.
Ok, two issues at play here, then.
First, the '03's were a bit different in their sat and radio setup then the 03.5 and later. So, if you have an 03 it may be more difficult than if you have an 03.5. And I honestly don't know how to tell the difference between the two.
The second is that the cable may be a problem. You might have to get a cable directly from Phatnoise, and I have heard that they are somewhat difficult about selling the cables if you didn't buy the phatbox from them.
Let me know how it goes, and if you can't solve it, I may think about selling you my cable for a reasonable price, since I probably won't be using my phatbox anymore.
Dave
use copper mesh instead of chicken wire, copper mesh will block everything, FM, AM, CB, even cellphone signal, but you have to block everything, RF is like water if you have a small hole it'll leak thro it.
Caelric, thanks for that information.
Not sure what my vehicle is, but I'll call Infiniti and see if they can inform me.
The cable may be the problem, but I'm doubting it because the Phatbox had an error when attempting to change the firmware. Basically, the light started blinking green for programming and it then one red light remained on meaning the firmware update failed. So, hopefully it IS the DMS. I called Phatnoise directly and they informed that they no longer carry the cable. I even attempted to contact Mike Woo(who is a developer there that was involved with the cables initially), but to no avail. Infiniti acts as if they never sold Phatbox's to begin with :-\. I guess they wouldn't know since the last ones sold were back in '03.
If you will, I may just purchase that cable from you regardless, because my radio stations seemed to have lost reception(maybe psychological after reading Injector's good info :-) since I've had this other cable installed. It looks as though they did a good job though. Let me know what you'd like to do.
