Exclamation 1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 "Budget" Carputer Setup

Well how are you doing folks, thanks for visiting my project page!

I started out desiring just a standalone gps unit like a tom tom however a friend showed me this site and I got hooked and spent a little less than a grand.

I knew that I would be getting rid of this car in about a year and getting a new camaro so I didn't want to spend too much time on making it look perfect and didn't want to make it pernament (will save that for next car in about 6 months). I decided to put my screen in my cupholder which fits perfect and doesn't move at all and has ok visibility and is easy to remove. Main reason for selling this car is not in that great of shape (key marks from when I bought it), has a lot of miles (130), and is pretty old. Looking to get a 02 camaro.

Carputer itself is a laptop in a docking station. Great thing about the docking station is that it adds 2 pci slots (no not pcmcia, pci!!), media bay (for additional hd,etc), and tons of other ports. Plus anytime I need a laptop I can just hit a button and take the laptop out.

The carputer is set to hibernate with a switch I custom fabricated into the dash. Takes about 20 seconds to go from push of button to listening to music. Powering this right now is an inverter (yes I know, bad!) that goes from the battery to a solenoid to the inverter. So basically when my car turns on it charges the solenoid and turns on the inverter. Then all I have to do is press the power button I fabricated in to my dash and the power button on my lcd.

To get music from carputer speakers I decided to stick with a headunit since if I didn't want to take my carputer with me to certain places I could still listen to fm music or cd's. Plus this will help me when I sell the car. It goes from my creative pci sound card to the auxilary on my hu.

    Carputer:
    -Dell Latitude C610 Laptop
    -Pentium 3 Mobile 1.2Ghz
-384MB RAM (need to upgrade, so if anyone has pc133 let me know!)
-20GB Master HD + 60GB HD in Docking Station Bay
    -Dell C-Dock II
-Allows me to add 2 pci cards
    -Wire a power switch
    -Lilliput 619GL-70NP Touchscreen LCD
-Creative Soundblaster Live 5.1 PCI Sound Card (in docking station)
-USB PCI Card (in docking station)
    -Linksys USB Wireless G Adapter
-Zippy EL-610 Light Up Mini Keyboard
    -GlobalSat BU-353 USB GPS
    -Logitech USB Noise Cancelling Microphone
    -Trendnet USB Bluetooth Adapter
    -Microsoft Wireless Mouse

    Software:
    -Windows XP Media Center 2005
    -Road Runner
    -Iguidance 2.1NA
    -LSX Skin
    -Igmon
    -Justin's Iguidance Big Button Mod
-Ctheme.ini (to enlarge street names in ig)
-PhoneControl.net (still trying to get to work with verizon xv6700)
-Mozilla Firefox (get wireless internet with my verizon xv6700)

Picture of Dell Latitude C610 hooked up to Dell C-Dock II docking station. I know it doesn't look that great but no one ever sees it. Maybe when I get time I will make it look better.

As you can see with the trunk flap closed and hatch closed the carputer is totally invisible.

    What the rear passenger sees.

    Closeup on screen.

Zippy Keyboard in glovebox (can take out, has about 4 feet of slack).

Headunit and Right below that is my button to power on the system.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome. I know it may not be the best setup but it works for me who was on a budget and couldn't make the setup pernament. Thanks!

And that's what matters: It works for you.
It works for you. Who cares about anything else?

Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Thanks! So what do you overall think about the setup? Negatives, Positives? I won't be offended by what you say.

My only issue is that in order for you to look at the screen you have to take your eyes completely off the road... Other then that, its good

Yes that has become a problem so I mainly just glance at it when no car is around or when stopped. Mostly just use the voice guided directions. I have the music control buttons memorized where they are so I don't even have to look at it to change songs.

But in my next camaro I am going to put my screen in the spot below the headunit. Will have to get rid of the cigarette outlet area and do some custom fab work but it will be 100x better.

    Suggestion

    Hey there;

I personally like the setup, and how everything is hidden. Myself, I'm hell bent on putting a carputer in my 1994 Pontiac Sunbird. I am a HUGE fan of most F-Body cars, and I do like what you've done with your setup. The car looks gorgeous as well.

As for the suggestion, what you might look at later, when you get a bit more finances, is you could get a USB based video card, and turn it into a HUD to show speed, distance travelled, etc.

The USB video card (Yes, they do exist, and they're reasonably priced) plugs into your USB port (usb 1.1 spec as well as 2.0), and allows for dual monitors. Not mirrored video, or anything like that. The ONLY thing I'm not 100% sure on is about reversing the display for a reflection on your window. You could leave your touch pad on the center console, like you have, and use it just for changing things.

Other than that, very clean install!

    Not bad at all!!!

Just a suggestion concerning the screen location: Why don't you integrate the head unit's location with the space below? Should look nice! Then you could have the LCD where the Head unit is, the head unit in the space below and maybe you could even still fit the cig lighter and some switches below...

you said it cant be permenant then get a good used radio trim piece and a center consol from a bone yard and save your old one!!! thats what i did in my carputer project 94 z28.

yeah automatics do suck but i got my tired 130k Z28 to do 14.00 in the quarter. it has 2.73 hwy gears also!!!!! think about this with a auto you dont have to let up to shift no loss of momentum.
