01/23/07------NEW FEATURE----------

Alright all, so after having some of my passengers critique my setup, I've decided to put away my second means of input for the setup, yeah the good old ATI Wonder RF remote. Thing works great but its just become too clunky and big. So I decided to hack apart a regular RCA remote and permanantly mount it in my shifter console. So I took the remote below and added to my console.

And the 1st outcome looked like this.

Then, using an iPac usb controller, I've setup all of the same buttons as I had on the ATI remote to the 13 buttons above (up, down, left, right, ok and 8 "soft" buttons meaning they are programmed for different uses as per the current RR screen).

I also have a second revision that looks alittle cleaner with some leds to show the up, down, left, right navigation arrows which I'll post pics of later.

08/12/07------NEW PC----------

Yup, thats right, my VIA M1000 has seen its last days (although it maybe a power supply issue!). Regardless of the real issue, I've decided to make an upgrade to the car computer. I had an industrial PC laying around that I was going to install in my sister's Mini Coop but that install fell through so, I thought, why not use it in my car! The board is made by Itox and its a mini-itx form factor capable of handling socket 478 chips (P4 1.6 installed). It has a bunch of usb and com ports along with holding 2 dimms of DDR ram. Only downfall is the onbard video is a bit disappointing but I'm trying to compensate for that with 1GB ram. The case was made by DFI Industries and is all metal with slots all around for great ventilation! I'll post some pics of my modded version of the case soon.
I've added an Opus 250 and so far the test run went well. RR is running really great, alot faster than my M1000 and I'm now able to run some nice Winamp visualizations.

I'm looking on the best way to mount the new PC in my trunk and I think I'm going with a 3/4 plywood shaped based with "L" shaped brackets holding the PC vertically on the base.

Well, the previous car computer called it quits after a total of 2+ years of constant use so I had to replace/upgrade! Here are some pics of the new carputer installed in the trunk. Carputer specs are as follows:
DFI mini-itx, P4 1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 60 GB HD, onboard vid/sound, XM Sat Radio, GPS navigation and handsfree bluetooth thru the carputer.

I'm fairly happy with the install so far as I want to make it look alittle more appealing. Pretty much started with a piece of plywood, jigsawed out the shape of the side trunk panel, built an inset box to house the carputer, connected lots of wires and voila! Oh and the last pic displays my latest addition to the R (a fire extinguisher), a must have for all my electrical connections.
